The end of the year is sucking the life out of me. I'm just ready to be doooooooooooone.

Oh yeah, you should definitely go to New Orleans! There are multiple ghost tours, and I'm sure you could find a haunted place to stay ( wink ). I'll let you know what the Pharmacy Museum is like.
toothpickmoe:
Thanks!

And yes to both of those. I was just lamenting how long it's been since I've seen a good game of Plinko.

My wife has had two pairs of black panties go "missing" from her apartment building. She thinks it's just chance - she misses grabbing them out of the dryer etc. I think it's weird that they're both black, and she's never lost any other garments that she's aware of. My money is on a panty snatcher. But I'm paranoid/pervy like that.

Oh, the conference was...

Yeah, I think for th statisticians, "p" is pretty pass. They're way beyond that, but it's funny how different techniques, expectations, and arbitrary values obtain importance in diverse fields.

They had a special but if you don't qualify then you just put up a deposit then the first month and move in, it was too small anyway but I was cutting it close on finding a place.

Life is kinda kooky and busy right now. Working on an article or two, teaching a lot, generally ready for my wife to get her ass out here.

Also: next week I'll be in San Francisco! Yea! Sushi, density and weird shit! I do have to present a paper at a conference ... but it's early Thursday, and then I'll be on my own until...

I think both of those things are highly possible.

Strong work on getting a paper presentation! And that's awesome it's so early in the conference.

Stuff happened!

Spring break was delightful. I saw the wife and friends, ate in the city. It was all good stuff. On a less good note, I slipped on my wife's steps and fucked up my left hand this time. It's been a bad year for falling. It's a hairline fracture, and no real pain. Luckily, I did not need a cast, and got away...

Damn ground being hard and stuff.

That was probably the most interesting piece of hers that I have read so far.

Sometimes, reading science fiction makes me cry. Not because I was moved, but because it hurts - so bad.

This is (just one) list of the best science fiction novels in 2009. There are some real winners on there, like The City and The City[/I and Julian Comstock]. Plus, a whole slew I'm excited to dig into, such as Finch, Transition, and...

Agreed. Jordan was wild and crazy in a good way, Martin seemed quite disciplined at first, and I liked how he kept killing off the "heroes"... but shit, man, we need some focus here. A thread or a link or something.

I have not, no. Too many names for that dude.

Chicago-based update!

1. Table Fifty-Two was less than hoped for. It was *fine.* But I wanted more than fine. I have a new policy against "upscale comfort food" I think. I've had better fried green tomatoes down here in Hyde Park, and for much cheaper (and a bigger portion). To be honest, the tomatoes weren't even that *green.*

2. Last night, we ate at La...

I think we all generally get that affliction. wink

And it would seem that others see wisdom in you before you do yourself.

That's fair. At least once we get past being a teenager and realize we don't know shit about anything.

Would anyone be hurt if I just ate pretzels for dinner?

Tomorrow, I fly on the jetplane back to the joyously flat Midwest. I am super excited. On Sunday, we're eating at TableFifty-Two. I am stupidly excited for this.

The rest of this post is about LOST, minor spoilers etc.

Just two random thoughts, really complaints (but little niggling ones):

1. I was...

That last journal was a downer. I'm over it.

I've watched a lot of movies lately, including:

1. Ong Bak 2 - The first hour was a snore. But the last 35-40 minutes is one non-stop fight, and many knees are delivered soundly to the heads of douchebags. Also: an elephant is used as a critical prop in the middle of the fight scene. This...

I've got head, face, and "other" covered, but in no great quantity...yet.

Sometimes my *career* gives me fits. I feel keenly aware of my *limitations* at this stage (the advanced resident/post-doc/visiting assistant/adjunct/junior faculty period). By limitations, I explicitly mean the need to keep people above me happy. By people above me, I mean, apparently, *anyone else in the profession.* It's pretty exhausting.

Because of my wife's possibly limited career options here, I've had thoughts about going on...

Indeed it is. And you can choose any team you want, living in a state with none of their own.
