What do you miss?

While I don't like to admit it, there really are times when I miss being home. I miss being around my family. And even though high school was hardly the best time of my life, I had a lot of *good* times. I miss them. I miss my old college roommate, and watching the The X-Files and eating Italian take-out...

Wow thank you for sharing that.

I miss that first apartment. The one I was writing about earlier this week. Your entry puts a lot in perspective for me.

I miss college. Not classes so much as the lifestyle. Good, "free" food that appeared like clockwork. All your friends in one building. So few worries. *sigh*

We went. We ate. We returned.

The holiday was survived. Actually, it was *more* than survived. I really had a blast. There was really no drama. I had so much fun seeing the family (sadly, there was no time to contact friends - I think I'll have to make a trip back in January for that), that I actually felt *bummed* about having to leave...

Isn't it great when the holidays are actually enjoyable? Hope next year is great for you.

Just wanted to add another tidbit about cars. Make sure to checkout rent-a-car places. They usually have good deals and the cars are always fairly new and in good condition. The drawback is that you can't be picky. If you find a car you like its probably the only one of its kind on the lot, no upgrading and no getting it in another color.

good luck!

Here's the perennial question when it comes to going home: Do I pack work or not? I usually do take something along, though I could not tell you why. The long and short of it is that I usually sit down and read about ten pages, meaning way more energy is spent in packing and hauling the shit than is actually accomplished.

Anyway, I...

Dude....Nip/Tuck is so sick and over the top, you'll be hooked by the end of the first episode. Rent the first season...you'll see..... biggrin biggrin

Oh man, I don't know about Deadwood, I've never seen it, but Carnivalle is fantastic....however, it got cancelled after only 2 seasons, So maybe it's best not to set yourself up for disappointment. wink

Today is "teh awesome," as you fancy internet kids say.

This morning I had to read through that first draft of my proposal. While it was not the greatest thing ever, it wasn't half-terrible either. So there you go. Now, I can *legitimately* spend the rest of the day reading a novel (Dan Simmons's Ilium - it's awesome). Tomorrow, I have to download some census...

All right, I stopped reading after spoilers should follow. I hope you enjoyed it, but I still want to see it.

Those are interesting points. Jackson said the original Kong was the movie that made him want to be a director, so I think a lot of the schlocky stuff was a nod to that. Hell, he even had Denham throw out Faye Wray's name at the beginning when they were listed possible replacements for the female lead.

I feel like Jackson has a sense of humor about what he does. It came across in the Rings trilogy and it comes across in Kong. Honestly, most film makers from down under seem to have this sensibility. Ever seen Dead Alive? It could be a truly horrifying and distrubing movie, but turns out being really funny and entertaining. Maybe that's just how they like their movies down there.

Just my two cents. wink

I like your Frankenstein.

In response to the grocery shopping-- I agree that if you must go, it is best to do so as late at night as possible. Or on Friday night, when people with lives aren't out getting groceries. I also discovered awhile back that it's much better for my marriage if he and I never set foot in a grocery store together again. whatever

I would love to find roleplaying sourcebooks for Los Angeles.

The long and short of it is: I'm not going anywhere. The real question is: Do I keep moving up the ladder, making a stink to the Dean and anyone else who will listen?

I have a sinking feeling that won't get me anywhere. We used to not have our health insurance paid here (to note, our competitor Ivy League schools do pay for health...

True. I realized after I wrote that that most private institutions are run as corporations. All the more reason to not go to school. biggrin

I'll gladly admit to being really excited about The Chronicles of Narnia movies. I'm a total fantasy maven, and unlike The Lord of the Rings (books I found too ponderous as a child, and actually still do to this day) or Harry Potter (books I feel I'm just too old far; I can't get into them), I actually enjoyed C.S. Lewis's Narnia world-building exercie as...

Thank you for the offer of assistance. I will only find out where I will be going sometime around March. If it is the University of Chicago, I will definitely drop you a line. I am not, however, going to graduate school for Political Science. On Monday, I get my Bacherlor's degrees in History and Philosophy. I am applying for Ph. D. programs in History (Russian) at most schools, except at UT Austin, where I am applying for a Master's program in Russian, East European, and Eurasian studies. Chicago seems like a good choice for me because Sheila Fitzpatrick is currently there and I believe that Cornell's Peter Holquist is accepting a position there as well.

Your journal is pretty interesting today. I would suggest, though, that the Left still has a lot of militant members. We could distinguish between a "liberal Left" and a "radical or Socialist Left" and then the liberal Left would be much less more in accordance with your analysis above.

I feel like I need to get that old update out of here...And thanks to everyone for their kind words. I'm doing MUCH better. I'm pretty much all healed up, and getting by gumption back bit by bit. smile

So, there's good news, and there's bad news. The good news is that they were able to fix my glasses, and that it looks like there a...

bizarro - i have never heard of these 'practise jumping out of bus' things! sounds like a pretty good idea actually though, i've often wondered how successful those emergency exits would be in a crisis. must be an american thang...

Indeed. Getting jumped outside of your apartment is not a lot of fun.

That's right, I have become a statistic. Yesterday, I took the day off from graduate school to go have lunch with an old college friend in the Loop. After that, I did some shopping in the snow on North Michigan Avenue (all looking, no buying - thankfully). It was a long bus...

That sucks - just one reason why I was happy to move out of Hyde Park...

Don't get me wrong. I loved the neighborhood, and never felt unsafe there... just that the frequent attack upadates the paper was running were starting to get to my psychologically.

Just moved up to Ravenswood - love the area, and the overall feel is similiar to HP - just more convenient to the rest of the city.

Glad you are Ok.
sweetavenue:
Jesus Christ. I am so sorry that happened to you!! I don't blame you for wanting to move. If you don't feel safe it doesn't make you a bad person for wanting out. I know exactly what you're saying and I know you don't want to go live in the suburbs or something.

Take a look at my old neighborhood, Logan Square. It's on the blue line and you could still get to U of C in a reasonable amount of time. I lived in the city all of my life so feel free to ask me any neighborhood questions if you're seriously moving.

And, I'm glad you're okay. kiss
