So, I was gone for a while because my computer was out of commission. I had a bit of screen flicker, and had an inverter replaced. I brought my (now dirty) MacBook ... to discover that now the CD drive won't read music CDs. I guess it has to go *back* to the Apple Store this weekend.
In the meantime, I also visited Las Vegas...

I see. Good to know. I'll just wait until they stop putting out new products to but any of them then.

Shit, I wish I got to go to Vegas when I did my MA!
A true irony: I study American political history, but I *hate* reading history.
Actually, the thing is, I don't really love American history that much. I mean, it's sort of interesting. What I'm really into is *institutions,* and I study them *through* history. And reading history sucks. It's just a list of shit that happened. There's no motivating theory. It bores the living fuck out...

Interesting. I just like studying things that interest me, period, and that selection is pretty whimsical. Since I'm long out of school this isn't a problem.

I *used* to think I hated history. But, when written properly, it's *all about* how large-scale structures have evolved.... or so says my armchair bullshit. I'm a philosopher. We're suspicious of history.
How are waffles and ice cream working out for you?
How are waffles and ice cream working out for you?
As I explained to one of my colleagues: "The thing about being married is that, while you don't get to have fun anymore, you DO get to buy kitchen appliances."
To which she responded: "I'm not sure I followed that whole bit, all I got was 'being married means not being allowed to have fun anymore.'"
But, things really *are* exciting on the kitchen appliance...

Mmmmmmm............ice cream waffles..............Too bad you can't take it on the plane.
I'm in sort of a "not updating" rut. So it goes.
Today, I hammered out the last paragraphs of my first swipe at a first draft of my first dissertation chapter. I'm not sure that's exactly as much of an accomplishment as it sounds like....
Basically, all the pieces are there - every section that I think has to be there, is there. And I...

glad to hear you're still trucking along.

West coast is just dandy. I've been having a really good time with it lately. I spend my first year here rushing home from lab to call the girlfriend who was two hours ahead, time-zone-wise and go to bed. After we broke up (which really was unfortunate), I've been working later, hanging out with friends here and being more positive about everything. 2007 is a good year, from what I can tell. I've been singing karaoke, seeing concerts and discovering Dance Dance Revolution.

Volver is an excellent film. Cruz is astounding in it, both as an actress and as a thing of raw beauty. I think Pedro decided to make Volver as a towering cinematic tribute to Penelope's cleavage. One could easily make a drinking game out of the movie: every time Almodovar's camera lingers a bit too long on Cruz's "womanly assets", take a shot. You'll be more blotto than Bukowski within the first 45 minutes.
Updates are for the weak!
I'm knee deep in my dissertation, writing and trying to slug out the theory on my middle chapter. It's even less fun than it sounds like (self-doubt sucks). But, it's also really great. I know the stuff I'm throwing down every day is bad and will need reworking. But it's unabashedly *mine.* I love it. LoveloveloveLOVE it.

Interesting take on it.

Yeah, those same people who confuse cynicism with sophistication are probably the losers who go out and vote. Like it means anything.
I like Richards a lot. I like what Obama has to say but, frankly, it's not just his inexperience that bothers me, it's that I haven't seen him do much with the experience he *does* have *but* talk. Wake me up when he pulls for some major legislation or something (unless I just missed it, in which case mea culpa).
Anyway, on the diss: GO!

Christmas shopping is *done*! (Is anyone else a fan of Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead? There's a part where the younger brother "takes care of the dishes" by launching them off the roof and shooting them. He then proclaims "The dishes are done!" We use some version of this line on a weekly basis at our house.) In random excitement, the fire...

And everyone loves colorful maps.
So, how many people ask you if you're becoming a master of Social Studies? Do you remember that class?
