So, currently recovering from a minor gastrointestinal thing. Sick is dumb. I hate sitting at home in sweatpants. It makes me feel foul.

Pitchfork over the weekend was pretty good. I really enjoyed Jarvis Cocker, the Hold Steady, King Khan, and the Apples in Stereo. The one bummer was that I didn't stumble on any new bands over the weekend. So it goes.

Festival food, maybe. I'm glad you're feeling better.

That's how my father is. He only gets sick once a year and when he does it's a doozy.

So, there is a job opening at the liberal arts school in the town where I grew up. I think, a year ago, I would have told you: "No way in hell." It's a tiny department, and I wanted to live in a big city. And part of me still wants to be in a big, fancy department in a hip urban environment.... but.

But...

Harvard seems like a fun placeto teach.

I have found that old sneaks up on you.

It's sneaky like that; one day your at the cutting edge of cool and then suddenly you're yelling at kids to get off your lawn and turn down that music.

So, hey, what does Alan Moore think of the Watchmen movie, and Zack Snyder and the (super shitty) 300?

I would rather not know [anything about the movie. Snyder] may very well be [a nice guy], but the thing is that he's also the person who made 300. I've not seen any recent comic book films, but I didn't particularly like the book 300....

Not taken in any sort of dickheaded way smile - it's a good question. I like those.

Um. Don't know, can't afford it... I think there's enough staging in theatre to decouple it from the backbrain. Also, enough conscious choice ("Hey, let's go see ... "). And you have to pay to get in.

I could be wrong, because I never go.

Hey! I got my first rejection!

It's a bummer, but it's not a huge deal. Most journal submissions are rejected. And the version I sent it, it was a bit of a stinker. That said, I got some really great feedback: some data things to try, a suggestion to expand the dataset, a theoretical frame to explore, and a few historical details to include/sweep away....

I'd love to get my hands on a copy of it when you're finished. Also a copy of the book when it gets published, and it will. I know trust me.
emotedcreations:
I understand trust me. I moved to Mexico and worked for free, so I could put off seeking a "real" job for a few more months.

It actually was probably one of the best decisions I've ever made, but that's not the point--procrastination baby.

Editing is more fun when:

1) Your chapter does not suck ass

2) You know what the fuck the chapter is about.

The more you know, kids.

There are days when I'm not quite sure why I fight with LaTeX and R. I like what they can do, and the presentation they put forth is really nice. But I think a lot of why I use them is so I look bad ass. But ugh. It's a headache sometimes.

So, you know, been busy and stuff. Two weeks ago, I checked out Wizard World Chicago and blew a wad of cash on comics. Over the Fourth weekend, we did the Taste, saw Wanted, and spent Sunday taking a walk by the lake. Summer is great.

I have switched almost all of my daily web browsings to Google Reader. Which is sweet. Ironically, it makes wasting time harder. I click over to reader, see there are no updates ... and, um, I guess it's time to get back to work?

We'll see how long this lasts.

Like I said, not having the phone totally screwed up my ability to reach out to anyone.

Funny enough, you were probably the only person that I knew would be there that I did not actually run into. Not helping was actually having work to do this time around.

I'm ambivalent about Chicago getting the Olympics. I can see how it could do a lot of great things for the city (improving the trains, leaving some great new facilities in its wake). But I'm sure it can also fuck some shit up (like moving lots of poor people out of their current houses, screwing up current parks).

What I do want to know is:...

The Olympics, if we get them, will be one of the most savage fucking civic trainwrecks this nation has ever seen.

I pray we get passed.

Maybe it can be leveraged into an el line along the lake front?

Outside of how *good* of an idea member comments being used to determine which sets go "live," I don't really get the *concept.* As in: the set is already available for me to see, and I look at it. Then I give a comment. Once it goes live, am I supposed to look at it and comment on it again? What is my responsibility as...

It's about getting more content up for less money; which of course translates out to less quality...

I have never been happy with what the member review concept has done to/for the site, it seems to help attract a type of person who is the exact opposite of what I came here to see.

Definitely! I have an actual assignment or two on Saturday, but I will have my cell phone with me to touch base!
