Holidays - complicated and stuff.
To be clear, my Thanksgiving was actually really delightful. My colleague and his wife made a turkey, along with potatoes, gravy, stuffing, cranberries, and a killer artichoke dip. The wife and I made sweet potatoes, baked beans, scalloped corn, and an awesome chocolate cake. Oh, and we brought petit fours. We drank wine and ate and talked and it was...

turkey day was great, but it does sound like your sitch sucks. but it also sounds like you've got a good outlook on it and will work it to the best of your ability to get back to where you'd prefer to be.

Sounds like academia. I'm sorry to hear about your advisor not advising. It's amazing to hear those kinds of stories, even though they seem to happen fairly frequently. Advisors get the fuck out of touch really fast, I think. And that kind of crap about pay seems like it's around pretty regularly as well. It seems like it's either "Accept the status quo" or "watch your back". Good luck on the market.
I don't care what you say, I love Lady Gaga.
Also: scalloped corn and cake on Thursday has me disproportionally excited.

You know, you are spot on..
I don't know if I am sadder than appropriate for someone I have only known a few months.
Who is to say, though, really?
Enjoy your Thanksgiving.

Yes and yes.
As part of my job here, I have to attend dinners where I learn about the college and stuff. Honestly, it is lame as fuck. I got into academia b/c I want to be left the fuck alone. I want to read my books, write my research, and teach my classes. Everyone else can fuck the fuck off. But, nonetheless: I must attend these dinners...

WTF??? I have never been shoveled such shit, thank god. I guess that's a difference between our fields?? And our schools. Good god.
And I hate to tell you . . . but I have had conversations about how to help students succeed, and how to help them write better, etc. Some of those conversations are pretty frustrating (given some of the students we're talking about), but some have been very useful . . . and actually, I wouldn't be surprised if you eventually find some like-minded colleagues.

Don't they? Shit, now I wish I really did have them!
I want a dog.
But I'm still too chickenshit to do much about it. (I also want a baby, but again, chickenshit. Well, and the uterus in which the baby would be planted is half a continent away. Fuck you spacetime!)
However, we're talking about the DOG thing right now. I do have a *list* to rationalize my status though:
1. Look, I'm traveling a...

Doesn't take long. I listened to my mother bitch and moan about it for years.
I rewatched The Dark Knight tonight. You know what doesn't work in that movie? Batman.
It's a great movie, but Batman sure looks goofy in it. He moves in a clunky way. Christian Bale gives him that gawd awful voice. The rest of the movie just hums with energy - especially Gary Oldman and Heath Ledger. The amazing chase with the semi, Batpod, and prisoner...

You bring up some interesting points.

Or Superman.
I was back in the city this past weekend, and I had a good time. It was good to see the wife. Graduation was surprisingly nice. I stood right next to one of my best friends from the program, and the whole thing was wonderfully formal. I hate to admit it, but it felt *meaningful* - like I was joining a tradition of UChicago graduates,...

Well, I may be able to change it. But they seemed pretty down on the idea in general, which is weird, because it riffs off some work my PI is doing that THEY FUND. Erg.
I have come to a conclusion: starting Sunday, all of my comments will be "member only." Also, from that point forward, all journal entries will be "for friends" only.
I may go back and friend-only all the old ones too. That sounds like a fucking lot of work though. But that seems to offer me enough privacy for now. So, if you're randomly just "following"...

One of your students find you?

I figure that as long as there are no pictures of you here and you're not using your real name, you're reasonably safe. Then again, thats the way things have been for me since we've had the option.
I like Amazon.com. A lot. I like that it has every book I'm looking for, that it gives me a nice discount, and that it ships me things for free. I *do* get annoyed at what a cocktease the free shipping is. I ask for free shipping, and my books - all of which are in stock - get pushed back to the end of...

especially now that you're in a small college town. I bet you have some good choices there.

As promised: pictures and adventures!
My dad and I set out from Moline, IL on July 22. That night, we stopped in Mitchell, SD. At the Corn Palace. But we forgot that camera. Anyway, I was really pleasantly surprised by the Corn Palace. It's basically a working civic center: the high school and local college play basketball there, and there are also concerts. But, in...

Hey, sounds like a nice trip. I know that route from the Black Hills to Billings - it IS faster than the interstate, but that is a lonely road. Someday you should double back there and check out the site of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Custer's Last Stand. It's pretty moving. Far more interesting for me than the giant heads, you know?
Glad you're settling in.

You most certainly don't "need" to, but I hope you enjoy your stay.
I like the stache, it's smooth.
