So probably maybe I think....

I got a job.

I'm the top choice, but it has to wind its way through the bureaucracy still. In particular, since it's at a state school, there needs to be assurance that the "line" is still active. It SHOULD be. But I cannot officially say "I iz employee!" yet. But it's close, ducklings.

It's a cool department, and a teaching-based job. Increasingly, this is what I want. I find myself disillusioned with the world of "high end" research-based social science, It's mostly banal and self-important. I want to be someplace where my job is teach some kids and you know, HELP them and make a DIFFERENCE to them. I mean, if you're down with research - more power to you. I think, especially in the hard sciences, people can do AMAZING work. But in political science? Ugh. I've had a good time here at my "elite" institution: I've learned a lot, had some good experiences. But I've had enough arrogance and self-importance and indifference to students (both undergrad and grad) to last me a lifetime. I wanna go somewhere and teach, live my life, and do my research that I care about on my own schedule.

I feel good today.

I think you're probably right, and that's certainly how I'd like things to pan out: paralegal cert first, then the MLS, then me finding a job that doesn't crush my soul into fine powder. biggrin

Hmmm, I find it kind of odd that they would interview people and then need to confirm they actually have a position to offer. I wonder if someone in the dept isn't being straight with you, or if someone in Administration isn't being straight with the dept. But maybe budgetary things are changing on a regular basis there and they (the dept) are just being cautious. I know budgetary things are changing on a regular basis at my institution!

Well hopefully, best case scenario, you'll get another offer and then you can force their hand a bit. Getting another offer will also allow the dept to put some pressure on Administration if they're being slow. And you can get a non-binding draft of the offer letter then too. Are you getting good mentoring through this whole process?
