You know what's great? Zodiac.
I saw it in theaters, and dug the hell out of it. When we were in NY, it was playing on cable and we caught the tail end of it one night. Which only made me want to see it again. So I picked up the Director's Cut DVD the other day (which was different in no major way that I could discern). Anyway, it just kicks ass. I love the way it evokes the period, I love Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr. I love the way Fincher shoots San Francisco.
Best of all, I love how the movie itself is so timely. The movie itself is the anti-slasher: there's no gore, there's no pat resolution. There are deadends and even the "conclusion" that "solves" the mystery is mostly conjecture and circumstantial; there never is a smoking gun or a trial and no one goes to jail. The whole movie at once a great telling of the Zodial case, as well as a fantastic metaphor for our current situation. In effect, the movie asks: how do you live with terror, and not lose yourself? It's heady stuff.
