One of my goals for the weekend is purging my book cases (and the stacks of books piled up in the closet). When I finished up my first MA, my advisor gave a bunch of books to me and a couple of other students. We foolishly thought this was an act of kindness. In fact, it was really nothing more than an attempt to gid rid of a load of shitty, out-of-date academic books that he didn't anymore. Now, I'm stuck with them and they are taking up valuable space. I need room for shitty, out-of-date academic books that are pertinent to my esoteric interests!

The sorting out of the books is not so much a problem. The real issue is what to DO with them. I'll be honest, I don't have the patience to sell them online. I don't have the time (or space) to slowly give them away to friends. I don't have foolish underlings (read: students) who will take them as "gifts." I'm pretty sure that no used book store would buy them all up. I figure I could donate them to something .... assuming the recepients will come and pick them up. But I wonder: Do libraries and reading programs really want books on German idealism or the history of European trade unions? I'd feel sort of bad ditching them with a bunch of books THEY have to get rid of. That's like pawning grunt labor on charity - I'm pretty sure I'd go to Hell for that (assuming I believed Hell or some reasonable fascimile existed).

So, I guess I'll sort .... and then go from there.

This is part of our ongoing process of cleaning up the apartmet and making it livable. Basically, reality (that is: We have no money - especially since my wife is going back to school. The deal we get here is too damn sweet to pass up and the neighborhood isn't that bad .... hopefully) is keeping us put. But, as part of staying where we are, we're cleaning out closests, doing some rearranging to make more efficient use of our space, and even redecorating (or maybe just *decorating*) to make the space more livable.

And we're getting new furniture, with some cash my parents gave to us! But, since we're broke, we're doing a lot of Ikea. I'm not clear yet if this is cause to celebrate....

Any improvement is good. And moving sucks, so staying put isn't so bad. wink
