I have this pet theory: There is a lot of animosity against women who:

1. Are not "traditionally" attractive AND

2. (Have the audacity to) Project *power* in some way.

I posit: Oprah Winfrey, Roseanne Barr, Michelle Rodriguez, Rosie O'Donnell, and Hillary Cllinton.

Now, I'm not saying you have to appreciate all of these women's contributions to the world. But disagreement is not the same thing as *intense dislike* right? I think women who refuse to be cute and know their place still really piss a lot of people off.

The rule seems to be that women can be tough as long as they remember to be PRETTY (Angelina Jolie or Charlize Theron anyone?). Of course, ugly chicks who are sweet - like your grandma - are always OK. There's a great virgin/whore metaphore there I'm sure, but I don't want to get that banal.

Take home lesson? It's only OK to be tough if most men still wanna bend you over.

I love Michelle Rodriguez, and I'd still do her. I wouldn't do Oprah Winfrey though. I do respect her awesome power to guide the buying habits of an amazing percentage of American consumers, however. Then again, I'm not a man so my thoughts on your question aren't really relevant.

You can always go back a few journal entries and respond! Responses are what I was looking for!

Being a nerd, I want to hear more about your dissertation. If you can explain why our public transportation systems suck (with the possible exception of New York) I'd love to hear it. I doubt you need any additional data on the CTA, but I have strong opinions on the matter if you need them for your research. wink
