Around this time of year, I really get nostalgic for *college.* OK. First, stop laughing. I am not still in college. I mean, real college - undergrad days. I used to LOVE this time of year as an undergrad. Because I'm anal, I usually had most of my work handily wrapped by the last week of the term and my grades were usually pretty solid. That meant, finals week was a time for me and my roommate to play Super Nintendo. We played a LOT of ChronoTrigger. And a LOT of Red Alert. It was too damn much fun.
In fact, I miss those days quite a bit. I mean, it's not like I'm unhappy now. I love being married, living in Chicago, and having more money then I did in college. I love my work. But, college was so GREAT. Every Sunday we'd order take-out and watch The X-Files. In the afternoons, we would watch Kids in The Hall and Dr. Katz re-runs on Comedy Central. Later in the afternoon, we watched Dragonball Z. The Daily Show or South Park were watching most nights. It was just FUN - we hung out, went out, talked. I dunno. I miss that feeling at the end of a term - having a good time, finishing up work, it's getting cold, and you're getting ready to go home for a month of sleeping in and hanging out with friends.
I also miss the summer inbetween my first and second years of my first MA program. My wife and I were living together then, and our 3rd roommate had gone home for the summer. We slept in every day, and quit work early every afternoon. We cooked out on the grill like ALL the time. It was just a really good time. We had pretty much not a care in the world, no family issues that come with being married, and we were making good progress in our academic programs. It was a really fun time.
I'm sure in five years I'll miss the carefree days of working on my dissertation proposal, as tenure is staring me down.....

Every debating group needs its crusty old fart
Dissertation proposal? You must be a glutton for punishment. My master's thesis is killing me. Good luck with that.
