I wanted to write something unpleasant here about the news wire. But that's unbecoming. I will say this: the news section of this website really sucks anymore. It used to not suck - it used to funny and relevant. Now it seems to be a collection of essays that try too hard, news stories disguised as polemics, advertisements disguised as news stories, and the worst...

everything in life moves toward entropy. c'est la vie. tell that to the hot french pornstars.
I had a big fat luxurious weekend of doing *nothing.* We didn't even leave the *neighborhood.* It was really boring, and that was really good. For about the last month, we've been on the go for most of the last month's worth of weekends (Pitchfork, Lollapalooza, sister visiting - and I think there may be events that are prior to Pitchfork). So I was pretty...

Also met some potential in-laws that were...shall we say a little different. However, as you said, if that is the price to pay it's a small one.

I don't like to write about music, because I don't really know anything about it ... But I just need to say: I love Tom Petty. I understand that Tom Petty is not a musical innovator, and that he has an almost frigthently consistent sound from song to song/album to album. But I don't care. I think he's too good to be a guilty pleasure,...

Tom Petty kicks ass. Any rock star who isn't very good looking and can't really sing is cool in my book.
Careful about flirting with the girl at the coffeeshop. Your wife is cool!
Pump Audio is a music placement service where they market your music and you split the returns 50/50. It's all non-exclusive, so it's a good way for an unkown artist to get some income on material they've already recorded. It's mainly for TV and film. My drummer said he got a check out of the blue for $250. They used one of his other band's songs for a cue on a Discover channel show.

Believe me, knowing something about music is no prerequisite for writing about it. I am exhibit A. A drink or two helps as well. & I think your Wilco comment is right on target. So there.

We can officially label my journal "banal" and "erratic" at this point.
Life is good. I'm busy - I read, do my research work. I'm having a few meetings in the next few weeks about some thinking I've been doing for my dissertation. I think I'll be in a place to start building data sets and doing archival work once fall quarter starts. That's my...

Tomorrow - we Lollapalooze. Also: I just invented a stupid word. Since it rained all night, and is supposed to rain through the day today, it's going to be a mudfest. We'll see how that goes.
Things have been lately. That's not bad at all. This past weekend, on Sunday, we went to the Pitchform Music Festival. It was a good time. A little heavy...

Thanks, man. It was a pleasure getting to know you on here. I think you were one of my first friends. And I'm glad we got to have drinks at least once. And indeed, you have other ways of contacting me, and I you.

Monday was my anniversary - I've been married for *three* years now. In a lot of ways it doesn't seem that long, but in a lot of ways it does. Not because it was bad, but because I got married just before I started graduate school (the second time). Since being married, I've finished courses, taken exams,...

Happy anniversary! Hey, where are you in school? I'm doing my PhD down at the University of Chicago, dissertation stage, and am also working in 19th cent. America (antebellum, mostly)...

Yeah, happy anniversary! Three years, eh? Kudos to you! I can't even keep a gf for two... So, keep having a good time together!
Tonight - fancy dinner!
ojaeflo:
Pretty much all day Saturday.
One or two guys that I write with for Newarama are coming into town and crashing at my place Friday night, so I'm entertaining company for the whole dilly yo.

my dinner- not so fancy. eating greasy pizza with a bunch of ladies who either look at me like i'm unapproachable or just pretend i'm not there at all.
Is it just me, or does this place feel a bit like a Maxim magazine, just with piercings and a (really badly working) message board?
It's not the models, by the way. (In fact, the sets over the past few days have been dizzyingly wonderful.) This is a *tone* thing.
I'm going to edit this to add even more bitchiness. I don't get people who...

I can dig that. If you couldn't get into the writing, you might enjoy the film. I thought it was hilarious, but I'm a bad sounding board for comedy. I find everything, and I mean everything, funny. I've been known to lose the plot at a bus station for absolutely no reason.
Of course, that makes everyone think I'mk on drugs, which is unhelpful and not true.

Buying furniture is work. At least at IKEA. There was bending, lifting, sweating, silent angry stares, and *even* bickering. But, despite the marital storm clouds, fucking furniture-on-a-budget was purchased. And all ended well.
We actually went to BOTH Chicagoland IKEA's, since the first one we went to was out of stock of a *key* item. I believe I have met my IKEA quotient for a...

So, last night the wife and I saw Fiona Apple. She was fantabulous. I really have nothing more to say. She *belts* out her tunes and dances madly around the stage. She's also stunning. She played at the Charter One Pavilion, which is a really wonderful place literally *right* on the lake. It's open air, and there's a great view of the harbor and...

i've been pretty well. on the planning front, i've been active in a proposed transit-oriented development project at a nearby BART station. i've attended and spoken at several city hearings (the various commissions and city council) as the project has progressed since december 2005. i even got to sit down to a free (
) breakfast with one of the members of the project team. both city staff and the developer have been very receptive to my comments. it's been a real pleasure to watch this project evolve. plus it's much more exciting to work with a city and developer receptive to and actively pursuing smart growth concepts (as opposed to my current city of residence).
if you've got the time, you can read about the project here. there are a a few PDFs at the bottom you can view.
this [PDF] is similar to the DRC presentation, but was for the city council meeting.

Sweet. Maybe I'll give it a shot. Currently, a friend of mine has decided that my nickname is Straddle. For no good reason other than she thought it would be a good nickname and I offered myself up for it. So, every time she talks to the wife she asks, "How's Straddle?"
