I'm trying to lose weight too, it's hard and I've got the added motivation of health complications if I don't - so I feel your ups and downs with enthusiasm.
One book i found really good (and I'm no self help book type person), was the Don't go hungry diet by Dr Amanda Sainsbury-Salis. It totally helped me learn to lose weight, albeit slowly but permanently. so far i'm down 15kg, 15kg to go and the beauty of it is, no maintenance period and no yo-yoing.
