different goals

at work the other day one of the bosses brought donuts, and my work partner asked me if I wanted to get one (he knows I LOVE donuts). I told him, "I'm trying to be better, I brought a protein bar for a snack, I'm good."

He looked at me and said, "You're not gonna win."

"Win what?"

"The workout," he replied (he and I joined a gym about 2 months ago).

I told him, "First of all the only person I'm competing with is myself. I want to be better this week than I was last week. If you want to get a donut, go ahead, I'm not stopping nor judging you for it." (He declined)

Competing against others for health is stupid. Also, we have very different goals (even though he's a year younger than me and an inch taller than me, I outweigh him by 50 pounds). He wants to get in better shape and get some leg definition; I want to not have my gut be the 1st thing people notice about me, not hate myself when I look in the mirror, and not be terrified of the thought of someone seeing me naked. Very different goals, very different reasons for working out.

He subscribes to the notion that guys are supposed to challenge and compete with one another; I subscribe to the notion that men can support one another without every little thing being a competition. Different mindsets also.

Ugh.  Clearly men can't relate to each other except in competition with each other.  What's ever been accomplished through that pussy way of thinking, duh.  I... I don't even ask to not be embarrassed by my gender.  At this point I'd settle for not being so justified in that embarrassment.
