So I was re-watching How I Met Your Mother the other day with my sons (they go through phases where they'll just watch and re-watch the same shows over and over; before this it was B99 LOL) and Robin said to Ted, "You're full of crap," when he said he was finally ready to settle down and meet a nice girl. When he questioned her, she replied, "You say that, yet you constantly chase after and fall in love with the wrong women." And it struck me, because the 4 women I've loved in my life haven't been right for me either.
Let's start with my ex-wife. When we met and started dating, legally it was against the law but I did it anyway because I was in love with her and she wasn't like anyone else I'd met before (just so we're clear, she was my 1st but I was not hers, so there was no pressuring by me into being intimate). Sure, it worked out in that we have 3 amazing kids and we're still friends, but it could've gone so much worse...like, me having to register on a list type of worse.
Then my 1st ex-GF, the one who was in an open marriage. In that one, I was acting on a crush I'd had for her from years ago, and she was proving to one of her friends that she could have me when that woman couldn't (long story, but that's how their friendship was). Now, if you are polyamorous, then as long as you don't hurt anyone I don't judge; but my ex-GF knew I wasn't like that and knew I couldn't handle it, yet pursued me doggedly anyway.
My last ex-GF wasn't a good match either, since we barely made it 2 years before splitting up. And then we come to the woman who broke my heart earlier this year. On paper we don't make any sense -AT ALL- yet she and I still dated. I know opposites attract, but I should've listened to my head and not my heart when it told me, "Are we sure this is a good idea?" cuz my heart was being stupid yet again.
But what does it all mean? Honestly, I don't really know; but it's not the 1st time a sitcom has given me some wisdom when it's relevant to my life, and I doubt it'll be the last. I just thought I'd share, that's all. Hope you're all having a great day :) <3
