I did a couple Tom Waits tunes.
Other than that, I have been working on some photography. I found some good photo paper to print with. It feels fantastic to be taking photos after not having a good camera for so long. My sis asked for some art for...

i think you're right - that community provides a "good" in and of itself that cannot be replaced with money. but i DO think it is important to realize it's not a necessity, and to also problematize it a bit (too much community can lead to an insular, conformist society).
signalnoise:
so much good stuff..
actually, i really do agree with you about communities. part of my thesis - i think - is about the ethical function of the city. it's all about sharing ideas and meeting "the other" - good things that help us and "civilization" as a whole. i just like to ask annoying questions
about always having an enemy ... there is this cool book by james morone called "hellfire nation." it's about how americans have to work really hard to build community, since our communities are not *obvious* (melting pot etc). a good way to accomplish that task is by finding an other, making them "evil" and working against them. it not only defines us, it *bonds* us. it's interesting stuff.

I always take pictures in the car. I've got a ton from I 5. I used one as a profile pic for a while. Nice work. LA is beautiful. This is from the drive back from Vegas.

I also just recently got a camera and I do the same exact stuff. Except, I ride the subway more. I think your car pics are way better than mine.
I had a quiet, quaint christmas. My mom got me a new digital camera, which I am really happy with. I was here and hung out with friends after I spent about two hours on the phone with my family.
Here's a photo of my christmas cactus.
I played at the Scene on Sunday. It was cool. Not too many people there, but I got...

hahahahahaha. i love the cactus.

whoa .. neighbors with valets. that's pretty swank.
glad you had a good christmas, and that your gigs are going so well. sounds like a good week. i find christmas really exhausting anymore. i'm just not used to this whole "juggling the two families" thing. it's a lot of stress. good fun still, but more stress than i'm used to. hopefully i'll adapt

I had an interview today at HRTV. It went really well. The job I'm gunning for is Television Audio Mixer. The pay and benefits are great. The hours are regular. The commute wouldn't be too bad.
I didn't know what to expect when I went in. The broadcast office is in the main building at Santa Anita. The guy I interviewed with was really...

Good luck. It sounds like a good gig & a good match for you. I know how tough the hunt can be, but if it leads to something great - hang in there. Happy Holidays.
obd:

Guess who's gonna be in LA Dec 29-Jan 2?

i hate to admit how much i love staying in. a good movie, good food - and my wife and i are so happy on our couch. i mean, we love going out for good food or what not either. we're just not social types, for sure. we're not much for bars and stuff. so it goes.
thanks for your reassurance too. i really do appreciate it.
that's pretty wild that your folks lived here in hyde park in the 60s. a woman in my cohort actually grew up here - prolly around the same period or a bit later (she's right around 40 right now). she really loves the neighborhood.
you lived in iowa too right? i grew up in a fairlly rural part of illinois (silvis - the quad cities, moline, rock island etc). so ya know, you're my kinda people
