Happy New Year!

New Year's was pretty relaxed. I went to the Brewery and hooked up with the Disgruntled Records people. We ended up crashing a "black party". No, it's not a racial thing, people were supposed to wear black and we all happened to be wearing black anyway. It was fun, exciting even, not knowing if you're going to get outed for crashing. Their scotch tasted good.

The rest of New Year's was spent back at my friend Glen's house. He made some good luck Japanese New Year's soup and we toasted with champagne. The next day, Glen cooked all day while we hung out listening to music.

Here's some more photos;

i think you're right - that community provides a "good" in and of itself that cannot be replaced with money. but i DO think it is important to realize it's not a necessity, and to also problematize it a bit (too much community can lead to an insular, conformist society).

so much good stuff..

actually, i really do agree with you about communities. part of my thesis - i think - is about the ethical function of the city. it's all about sharing ideas and meeting "the other" - good things that help us and "civilization" as a whole. i just like to ask annoying questions smile

about always having an enemy ... there is this cool book by james morone called "hellfire nation." it's about how americans have to work really hard to build community, since our communities are not *obvious* (melting pot etc). a good way to accomplish that task is by finding an other, making them "evil" and working against them. it not only defines us, it *bonds* us. it's interesting stuff.
