Thanks for all the feedback on the jealousy situation. I know it's something I need to sort out on my own, but it was nice to hear everyone's opinions!
I'm again posting from work. I'm so revved up from an IM arguement I had with my friend Al.
His stance is that 'Kill Bill Vol. 1' should have been shown in it's entirety. Cutting it in half violates the genre, and voids Tarentino's effort to do something original. Tarantino could have 'changed how things were done' if he had not given in.
I agreed to an extent. Sure, that would have rocked, but it's Hollywood. It's all about the benjamins baby. Twice the ticket sales, dvd sales, poster sales, etc. Greed will win in that arena any day.
We somehow then got to arguing about how there are no original films any more, and that he feels a shitty art house movie is better than the best blockbuster, because they at least preserved their integrity and didn't give in to 'the man.'
I say if it sucks, I don't care who did it. I want to be entertained and watch something that draws an emotion from me. Fuck wasting 2 hours of my life on something I don't enjoy. I get enough of that at work
Al then called me a lemming.
That was the last straw. I take movies very seriously. And it was clear that this arguement wasn't going to end.
My feelings are this. Hollywood is all about money. And so is 99% of the world. Fine. Great. Get past it. Focus on something else. If you can't, you'll burn yourself out. Tarantino has already changed things. He did with Pulp Fiction. Kill Bill does too. The women are amazing characters who don't get naked, giggle, and there's not much dialogue in the film. There's also a boatload of gore. That never would have made it in a 'standard' Hollywood production. The women would have been topless by the first 30 minutes, and that gore would have gotten a nice little NC-17.
But for QT I think the bent the rules. Rather than reading 'ban this movie for it's violence,' it's getting great reviews. 'The Mainstream' loves it too. I think it's a success. And if QT had to sacrifice the splitting of the movie to get that mainstream, then so be it. I think it's a small price to pay.
But Al sees it as negating everything. Giving up on your principles automatically negates the whole thing. Al says "And what about those people who paid their $7 expecting to see a whole movie?" I say then "That's your typical uninformed consumer who fuels the economy. Doing everything just because of a commercial or because their friend said it was cool."
That really got him good and mad.
We continued to argue in circles. What, did you think they called it "Vol. 1" just because it sounded cool?
Life is a compromise. Sometimes you have to do things you're not thrilled to do, just to get where you want to be.
I loved the movie. I may see it again. I'll see the 2nd one. I'll probably buy both dvds. And apparently this makes me a shallow and stupid person. Who the fuck cares. =)
