Everyone knows I had cancer treatment and surgery during this year. People always asks me how I'm doing. Quite a few people are surprised that I'm still feeling the effects of the the chemo. It's kind of funny in a way, other than some back pains, the cancer didn't bother me at all. The chemotherapy is what made me so sick.

The most noticable problem that I have from the chemo is ringing in my ears. Sometimes it gets really bad for no known reason, but whenever it gets quiet enough, I can hear it enough to bother me and keep me awake. I think my hearing isn't as good as it was. My wife says that my memory is worse, I don't know about that one. While there is a very small chance for me to get testicular cancer again, because of the chemo there's a chance of leukemia. I also can't recieve supplemental oxygen. I really need to get a medical bracelet for that, since it would kill me.

Four out of five had elevated cholesterol levels - 25% had developed high blood pressure after chemotherapy. In addition, nearly a quarter had hearing loss, and over a third had some problems with nerve damage.

Long Term Effects w/Testicular Cancer Treatment

I have nerve damage, but it's not from the chemo, it's from the surgery. It's a numbish, uncomfortable, and sometimes slightly painful area on my hip. Also from my surgery, I have a pretty damn big, uncomfortable scar. I can't stand my shirt touching it, unless I have lotion that the doctor gave me all over it. I have what seems to be a permanent, slight swollen part on my stomach, next to the scar. I get nauseated fairly often. There's a bunch of small problems that I have to deal with, I'm sure I haven't thought of them all just now. Oh I almost forgot, but my wife was kind enough to remind me, I can't ejaculate and I can't have kids.
Info about stuff:

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

Retrograde ejaculation - A male fertility problem that allows the sperm to travel into the bladder instead of out the opening on the penis during ejaculation. Retrograde ejaculation may be caused by the severing of the sympathetic nerves during RPLND surgery. The presence of semen in the bladder is harmless; it mixes into the urine and leaves the body with normal urination.

Retroperitoneal Lymph Node Dissection - RPLND - An RPLND is an operation where the lymph nodes surrounding the aorta on the back wall of the abdomen (para-aortic) are removed in order to 1) determine whether cancer has spread outside of the testicle and 2) remove the primary metastatic site(s). The RPLND is a major operation involving an incision from the sternum to the pubic bone. A full bilateral lymphadenectomy involves the removal of all retroperitoneal lymphatic tissue, while Modified versions of the operation only remove left or right sided nodes. A possible side effect of the bilateral procedure is retrograde ejaculation. A nerve sparing technique used with a modified procedure may be used to avoid this problem.

Anyway, I hadn't thought about how much a person goes through with cancer treatment, before I went through it myself. I've posted a quite a few journals that people seem to take the wrong way. I don't want any pity comments or anything like that. I'm a happy, semi-healthy person. I have a great wife, great friends, and great doctors. I was and still am very fortunate, for a person that's been in my situation.

Also: Restless legs, my sideburns started growing out blonde, I've gotten hairier, the hair on my head isn't fixable without gel.

infinity:
Cancer treatment is really rough, it's one of those areas where everything is always progressing and advancing, but there is a really long way to go before treatments can be specific enough as to minimize or eliminate side effects. The chemotheraphy messes with so much of your body, hopefully most of the side effects will go away as the years go on. You were in really good shape, since you have access to really good healthcare and of course your wife is a professional in the area, which is also something very few others have...
