You see someone walking down the street. They make eye contact with you and then they say, not hi, not hello, but "How're you doing?"
You reply back with a "Pretty good thanks" and continue on.
I personally feel kind of like a dickhead for not saying something like "fine, how about you?" But I mean really, I don't give a shit. So why make it seem as though I do?
What really pisses me off is when I don't even ask how they're doing and they tell me anyway, something like a "fine, thanks." That just tells me not only do they not care for my answer but they also pay no attention.

Yeah, people are stupid, what can you do. Sometimes, however, people are just tired. Take the time I was in a cab to the airport. When I got out, the driver said, "have a nice trip." I waved at him and said, "thanks, you too." While he was going on a trip, he was going to bring someone else from the airport to the city, I don't think that was the response he was expecting. I was obviously listening, but not thinking.
