okay...i heard on npr this morning that a plethora of computer experts are telling the pentagon that the computer and internet voting software they have unveiled is hackable and unstable. they said it boils down to this- there is no way to be absolutely sure whether the vote a person casts is indeed the vote on the machine. the pentagon dismissed their claims and announced that the software may be used as early as february.
is this possibly one of the final nails in our democracy? am i being dramatic?

it's getting bad folks...really bad. i mean, this administration simply refuses to even address the complaints of the citizens of this country. the faith based initiatives, i hear, are refusing to recognize pagan religions at all. the patriot act, which no one really likes, is being pushed for renewal. deficit spending is being piled on higher than ever without regard to public opinion on funding this stupid war. do we no longer have a fucking voice?

and if we go to computer voting, there really is no way to be sure things aren't being rigged.
a voting booth has MOVING parts that you can SEE and can test. software is a different animal altogether and much more subtle and able to be manipulated for nefarious purposes. i have heard it suggested that the only way we can use computer voting without fear of tampering or malfunction is if the computer actually prints out your vote for you, then you can drop it in a box. at least that would be a physical manifestation of your vote, which i believe is essential.

ugh.
