Have you ever stopped yourself from doing something because you were afraid? Maybe you had a similar experience in the past that was painful, or turned out badly, or your fear of repeating that experience kept you from doing something you enjoyed or trying something new.

When you bring the past into the present, you stop ourselves from doing things you enjoy, trying new things, and ever fully experiencing the moment you are in. You don't want to feel sad, so you hold it in. You stifle your feelings. But as you know, feelings are like a pressure cooker; too much pressure and they POP! When you don't express our feelings in that moment they are bound to come back every time you do something similar.

Living in the present requires fully focusing on and opening to what is occurring right Now; accepting and welcoming whatever emotions are present, experiencing them, and then letting them go. In this way, they will actually stay in the past, leaving us to celebrate every new present moment.
