morgan's journal made me think of that moment when i saw the Pacific ocean for the first time a few years ago. i had been in the atlantic so many times that, while it is intense and beautiful and humbling, i was bored and sort of desensitized to it. seeing the other great ocean for the first time made me feel this internse spirit of conquest and fulfillment. that i had just driven three thousand miles and i had reached the limit was overwhelming to me. i got out of the van and stood at the edge of this cliff on route 1 in oregon. i was silent for what felt like a day, but was just a minute. it was mind blowing.

shortly after that, i moved to colorado, where there are no great bodies of water. i was very depressed there. now i live near a giant lake and just standing at one end, watching the water disappear into the distance can solve just about any problem.

what is your relationship to water?

I wish I was a fisherman
tumbling on the seas
far away from the dry-land
and its bitter memories

-The Waterboys-

I took a year off from college to go crab-fishing in Alaska - made a bundle of money, and couldn't sit still

took the Coast Guard exam - and went straight back out to Alaska on a Seagoing Buoytender/Navy Salvage Tug

the immeasurable Pacific is a nightmare dreamscape balm - that I thought would cure my manic-depression, and almost did

a demanding natural Mistress that soothes and tosses (the ocean) my present land-locked state is temporary misery.

water has healing properties and I take to it with gusto - I have a tendency to jump into every substantial body of water that I run across
