i watched prairie home companion tonight on koce public television.
one of the things i cant understand i never did in minnesota was go the fitzgerald theatre in st paul to see garrison keillor put on this magnificant show live.
his ficticious lake wobegon is like every town outside of the metro area of minneapolis/st paul. and i can relate to every story keillor weaves. from the characters to their obsessions with hotdishes and pans of bars.
and tonight as i saw it on tv for the first time he closed the show with a story about his youth....and a painful family gathering where all his aunts were asking him his plans at the university of minnesota. "journalism" he said. they pictured seedy men in the back of bars drinking hard booze smoking and trying to get the big scoop. "better than being a writer of fiction" they thought.
and he said how he at one time he thought things would have been different had he not stayed, one being that he drove his car into an accident and ended up on life support instead of having to endure the bland pain of that place , the other joining his friends that went to california to "look around"
they all stayed.... seemed to be fine, happy. much like i think myself to be. but there was something about staying in lake wobegon to him. the people are good, decent and kind. you know who you are and so does everybody else and thats just the way it is.
and i sat with my mouth open as it seemed like he was telling my story.
lake wobegon. where all the women are strong.....all the men are good looking....and all the children are above average.
thats my minnesota.
