here is something i've been thinking about a lot lately. It has to do with tattoo culture and fads and more specifically this thread in the tattoo group. Portland has HUGE tattoo culture. HUGE. I heard the statistic recently that 1 in 4 people have tattoos nowadays. In Portland, i'd guess it's more like 1 in 2. Seriously. Since this is the case, i see a lot of tattoos- good and bad. And i've been wondering lately what will happen to all of us with our silly trendy tattoos that meant a lot to us when we were 20. A lot of text in this thread is song lyrics. I wonder if when some of those people are 50 dashboard confessional lyrics will still seem cool, or if not cool at least meaningful. How about the guy with Will Farrell's character from anchorman? What will he think? It seems like tattoo culture is changing into people just getting random things they like inked on them, and i don't know how i feel about that. On the other hand, it's not like i can say all of my tattoos are deep and meaningful. They aren't. Nor do i think they have to be. But it seems like a lot of tattoos i see around are just trendy hip things with no deep thought behind them. i guess maybe that text tattoo thread really bothers me. maybe i'm being petty and stupid, but i got my text tattoo almost three years ago, before i had ever seen anyone with one. (i mean a big fat block of text with nothing else, see this picture for an example) it's a nietzsche quote that really means a lot to me. for some reason it just really irks me to see people getting big blocks of drivel tattooed on themselves.

NB i don't mean to single anyone in that thread out, i see a few people around town and on other sites with tattoos that are just as bothersome. Also i don't really care all that much, i just needed to vent. Ultimately it is one's own choice what they get tattooed on themselves. i just hope i'm around to see the wreckage in about 30 years.
Also NB i am just as curious what i am going to think of my own tattoos in 30 years. It should be amusing!
