Initially, I went to college planning on being a history profesor. But the pigeonholes that the academic discipline of history are divided into were too maddeningly specialized for me to stick with that. I graduated in 2004, thinking that maybe I could be a diplomat, so I took the foreign service exam, got an interview and then the election happened. I figured if worse came to worst, I could still work under Powell for four years if necessary, but of course Powell was the first guy he fired. I withdrew my candidacy, never did find a career, and am back to doing the job I went to college to get away from.
Linguistics was a lot of fun, though. Don't let me talk you out of it. I use it to create imaginary languages (speaking of nerd points . . .) in my spare time. But unless you're planning on staying in academia, I'd recommend at least a second major. And take internships.
And yes, Latin is at least very, very sexy.
