so i work in an emergency room and love almost all of the aspects of doing my job, but the one thing that i really dont like is the deading of my senses to the huiman condition, but this a normal and neccesary adaptation in my line of work, you can only see so many small children who have burns that ciould have been prevented by better parenting, so many drunks with no place to go except the bottom of the bottle , before you stop feeling anything, i miss the feeling of caring about these people, i feel like it is the essance of humanity. its a strange and neccesary paradox that my need to help people has emotionally shut me off to those very people. thoughts?

That's pretty hardcore thinking. I can't imagine working in a hospital setting at all.

It's actually perfect for me... I work just about as much or as little as I want, get full time pay and benefits, and as a paramedic you can't beat the pay... It's the healthcare system that is the problem... And being a moving part of it it's hard to look at the broader system and see an easy answer... We cure diseases and symptoms we don't cure people, which is a much more difficult thing to do, and it doesn't seem to promising for the future, with the health reform s that Obama is trying to pass, no one has ever benefited from govt. Involvement in private sector industry... In the long run it will weaken our health care system and hinder our ability to effectivly provide healthcare services to our communities
