The Nick Gilder thing is, I think, a bit of a generational thing. Every so often it becomes popular for male vocalists to sound like women. Parts of the 50s and 70s spring immediately to mind. Now, if you lived through the period, you probably wouldn't confusion the gender, but, if you hadn't, it's really easy to thing Frankie Valley might've been a chick. Ah.
