First of all, my new set "Fools Rush In" is up and doing great, thanks everybody for the great comments I love yousmile Secondly, my boyfriend and friend just left to go to the G20 protests in Toronto. There have been new laws created by the cabinet for G20 to better suit the police force that contradict the charter of rights and freedom...If you're within a certain amount of space from the border line you can be identified, and arrested upon refusal, no matter what you are doing. Figures that this amount of space can change to suit whatever the cops want, it's their rule. No one knew about the laws either you had to either hear it on the news or witness arrests. No warnings. Innocent people going to speak out are detained for doing what we all know to be fair. This CAUSES resistance when people know they're behaving under their rights and still get put in wire cages...who are the ones causing the tension? Wishing my man good luck, hope they aren't getting blasted with sonic sound guns...lol that's laughable I can't believe how the system can treat it's constituents. Fuck life.

Hi, I hope you were safe this weekend at the G20. I hope you have a safe trip back to wherever you come from. If you were safe, you probably have police officers to thank for it.

These aren't really "new laws" and they don't contravene the charter. The G20 site was given the same legal status as Queen's Park, the Federal Parliament, Rideau Hall, or any courthouse or city hall in the land. You can be asked for ID and detained if you don't produce it at any of those places. On the subject, almost every weekend at Parliament there are peaceful protests that shut down streets, and nobody gets arrested. Just goes to show what politeness can get you.

As for people not being aware, these rules were passed in a legislative assembly, same as all other rules. It's not parliament's job to make TV commercials about new laws. But these laws were publicly known in the media so it's a moot point.

Being detained for 24 hours on suspicion isn't against the charter. It's a well-established power that the courts have allowed police to have, that balances the "peace, order, and good governance" clause of the Constitutions Act with personal rights. I learned about being detained for 24 hours in grade 10 history. Maybe a lot of protestors skipped that class because they seem shocked every time.

What protestors fail to appreciate is that the charter only enshrines a right to "peaceful assembly" (s. 2(c)). Once an assembly is no longer peaceful, then that right no longer extends.
