Electrohead's got it nailed. Mine and Zentetsu's previous partner sat on his issues until it exploded into a really nasty, resentful fight that almost imploded the whole thing, and ended with him choosing to end his involvement in our family. Zen and I are still at it, with the most excellent companionship of Jaybird, and the openness that we've been able to cultivate (Jay's previous poly experiences being VERY helpful) has been awesome for over a year now.
Communication is key, and jealousy/resentment/fear/anxiety usually get out of control only when they are not being honestly addressed. Periodic "hey, how is this working out for you?" discussions also give an opportunity to express these things and head them off before they get ugly.
Be respectful of each other's needs and boundaries, and even if things don't pan out in the relationship department, you can end up with friendships that last a lifetime.
As for the "f/Family" terminology, our relationship, any associated spouses or offspring, and close friends and/or lovers that our relationship affects are referred to collectively as our Tribe. As the connotations are more hippie and less Mafia, we get amused indulgence instead of suspicion in most circles.
We wish you happy kids and loving partners.
