we have two children, 13 and 5. i had been stressed over the 13 year old and his homework allergy.

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

we started out this school year with strict rules- he's miraculously gotten good grades, despite his lack of effort. now in 8th grade, and still in ap/honors level courses, this will quickly cease to be the case. he's smart, and that's part of the problem! he's got this subconscious idea that since he's smart, he'll get good grades. nope, sorry, grades are based on effort. now this year he's got a tough teacher with really horrible social skills, and she teaches math. so he's got to really produce in a class that is presenting honors level 8th grade and 9th grade material. if he pulls it off, he'll enter the high school next year with 5 high school credits and 1 college credit under his belt.
thank goodness we are a polyamorous family, because my husband and i are shit with math. our boyfriend got the algebra duty biggrin

but i didn't see this coming...the 5 year old seems to be the one who's going to have the most problems. he's started kindergarten this year. i have suspicions that his pre-school didn't focus much on academics, and he's just now starting to learn reading and writing. and we have hit a wall.
i think he may have a learning disability.
we go over his words sent home from school tonight. we say the word, spell the word, write and sound out the word. then, to cap it off, i ask "so, what's this word? biggrin" and he stares at me blankly. after all that effort, and repeatedly saying the word, he has promptly forgotten it. there is absolutely zero retention. we repeated this over and over, with the same result. it didn't matter if we went back to it 5 minutes later, or immediately.
we need to have him tested to find out what we are dealing with. i'm sad. i know there must be many successful people who battled learning disorders, but for me, that's the key word. 'battle'. it's just not in my personal experience. i taught myself to read at 3, and i felt my older son was slow to pick it up, starting at 4 years old. i'm not prepared for a child that will have a stumbling block to every step of his education. everything in life is built on the foundation of reading and writing. i can't relate to this difficulty. this is going to really challenge me as a parent.
it keeps echoing. does my son have a learning disability? frown
