My scholarship application essay. I want to study Industrial Design in Denver. I woke up one morning, and I simply knew it was what I had to do.

>>
I have always believed in the value and necessity of contributing to society. In the inherent worth of leaving a part of myself behind that will be remembered and will add value to the world, in any way, however small. Be it short term or long term, my career priority as an artist and designer would be to always create things that will instill or manifest emotions in the audience or user. Art is useless I feel, if it does not entertain or engage the targeted consumer of the creation. Creativity is a tool to make the world a more livable place, and creativity in art and design should always aim to achieve that goal through attempting to create an aesthetically pleasing, functional and interactive environment.
In the short-term, I have ambitions to create objects that will first and foremost be commercially lucrative, because I believe that good art will always bring in good bucks, and I want to create things that people will fall in love with enough to want to pay. The price of any work of art does not determine exactly the value of the work as an art piece; but at a reasonable price, it is nonetheless a good marker of its worth. Admittedly, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I believe that there has to be a beholder beyond the artist herself that should find her work desirable enough to pay good money for.
Long term wise, I want to create things that are lasting. In other words, Icons. I want to make art and design goods that people will find pleasing for a long time to come. It may sound rather ostentatious to say my long terms goals are to aspire towards Le Crobusier renown, but I believe that is what all designers and artists should aspire towards. All that basically stands for is the creation of art that satisfies the world so totally that it becomes a classic. Design that is so practical and so pleasing people cannot do without.
I have chosen to pursue Industrial Design in the Art Institute of Colorado because I believe that it is a course that will appeal and challenge, simultaneously, my scientific capacity and artistic talents. I have always been fascinated with the way people interact with the objects around them, how these objects influence their behaviors and moods, and the way in which they stimulate interaction between independent individuals. Ive always known the improvements I would make to certain objects so that theyll become more user-friendly, the furniture I could design to either stimulate interaction within and environment or to grant an exclusivity to individual spaces, the vehicles I would like to see running on the street in a few decades, or the gadgets I would like to see invented in a few year that could make life so much more convenient. Industrial Design would satisfy my need to create beautiful things while gratifying the part of me that wants to make the aesthetically pleasing, useful. And I believe it is not a matter of which should be the chicken or the egg. I truly believe that beauty is a necessity for living, and while sometimes an object that has yet to be invented may be in need of a sexy outfit for its prototype, it is equally important that existing objects should be considered for sensual facelifts, should they require them.
The Art Institute of Colorado has rigorous, well structured and diversified programs, which I believe is absolutely necessary for a discipline like Industrial Design. I believe their program will develop my ability to come up with creative and innovative solutions for a number of different situations, from automobiles to cockscrews to tampon inserts. They have a program that is focused, without being stifling. In it, I believe I will be given a chance to further develop my imagination and creative capabilities, and the opportunity to realize these creations tangibly. The course they have is one that will ensure I am given all the opportunity to graduate with absolute competence, not to mention competitiveness, in this particular field.
Studying Industrial Design will further enhance my abilities in seeing the practical aspects of art and design as it pertains to everyday living. It will develop my understanding of art and the aesthetic beyond pure pleasure or provocation into pleasure and provocation with a practical purpose. It will help me understand art that goes beyond the pleasing of one single individual at a time; where the pleasure an individual may acquire from any creation is not only determined by how that piece of art looks or feels, but also by how other people respond to the same piece of work and with respect to each others reactions.
This course will guide me in my discovery into art and design that doesnt seek to function alone as impartial, socially disconnected pieces that only consider the artists view point, and only seeks to expound her assertions about the observations of the world around her. It will help me go beyond art that doesnt look to incite interaction from either a single individual or many, into art that does.
I believe my training will equip me with practical abilities I can use to realize my dreams of placing the city-state on the world map of the ultra-cool and mega-hip. Art is not, cannot, and must not be but one aspect of the city. To truly turn the nation into a state that is artistically aware and appreciative, the people have to live it and be it. It is not about international shows, cosmopolitan talent and educated in Pasadena film graduates (nor Quasi-Parisian Impressionists, or Semi-Stockholmian Wallpaper features).
The development of art has to be a state of mind within the nation, from the bottom level up, and in order for that to happen, the people have to be constantly aware of it. They have to be living and interacting with it. Art is a culture, and I am and will always continue to bring this message across however I can and to whoever I can. In my own way I will always attempt to push for an environment in which creativity can be allowed to flourish. I will always want to create things that conjure certain emotions that people can enjoy, and I would want them to be able to enjoy these things as often as possible. Only by bringing artistic creation to where it is accessible by anyone will people start to realize not only the value, but the necessity, in art and design, and will they start to appreciate it as something beyond an activity that is meant for people with too much time and money on their hands.
My proposed training will enable me to achieve these goals by bringing the pleasure of aesthetically pleasing, user-friendly functionality to as many people possible. I will also be able to play a part in developing the physical image of the state as a place that knows what good design is all about and one that appreciates the lifestyle it brings. But my training in the Art Institute will not be limited to that, because while there is the sort of preparation you can get from a structured course, there also exist the education and influence of studying in a cosmopolitan institute that is located in a city as artistically vibrant and aware as Denver, with other like-minded artist who are equally as determined and passionate about their craft.
I plan to return not only with the physical and intellectual capacity to aid the city in its artistic development, physically, but also to return with the ability to contribute to the dissemination of the ethical values that pertain to the arts. To its encourage its appreciation, but more importantly, to fuel its cultivation, within the country.
