I don't have a general problem with paintings/sketches of fruit in a bowl. It's great practice for things like technique and shading. Landscapes are great for proportions. Flowers are good for technique, shading, and proportion. I am not completely against fruit, flowers, or landscapes/cityscapes. I think some cityscapes are absolutely beautiful and should be painted.
I do, however, have a slight annoyance with almost every single gallery in Tennessee that thinks that flowers, landscapes and fruit should be set at such a high value. I'm really struggling to see why people try to experiment, express, or break out of boxes at all. Everyone wants you inside the box. It makes people more comfortable when everything is so easy.

(There were only two galleries that showed a sense of independence and a bit of flair - The Twist Art Gallery and The Art & Invention Gallery. They are the only exceptions in this slightly sad rant.)

Why even paint things that are bright or fun when everyone wants fruit?
Why not bare breasted buccaneers, pin-ups, or even a tad bit of color?
I guess it doesn't really matter at this point. Since I'm planning my own art show and everything.
Still, it would be nice to know if anyone else out here in Tennessee was of like mind. Does anyone want anything more? Or is everyone okay with fruit in a bowl being it?

that is all.

It may just be your area, hon. Not that that helps you. There is an art gallery in my town, small part of San Diego county as a whole, that regularly shows very daring and somewhat controversial work, and many are full or partial nudes (a big nono in many parts of head-in-the-ass America, sorry to say). You would have little trouble showing it here, and more metropolitan areas. Your greatest problem would be competition.

It's funny you mention your bare-breasted buccaneers...I've had my eye on a pretty one (heh), but Haven't said anything, since you want to keep it. Understandably so; it's a great painting. I didn't say anything before, because I couldn't afford it. It seemed lame to say "ya I want that, but can't buy it". I bring it up now, because I get the feeling you think your work (at least that one) doesn't have fans. Not true.

Good point. Not used to thinking that way, but that'd be pretty cool. smile
Reminds me, you asked a little while back, about supplies. I may have some brushes, nothing nice mind you, but new. Think they were an extra set, and I don't use them.
