I grew up in the Boston area in the 70s, when radio there was unbelievably excellent. Great college stations, a few free format (almost pirate) small stations and a couple of major players in the then new FM scene spelled the death knell for the more common Top 50 AM radio station, 680 WRKO. 104.1 FM WBCN ruled our airwaves for a couple of decades and played B sides, unreleased recordings, anything they thought was interesting and (nearly) on air quality. I was exposed to a wonderful variety of music at home and also on air. When I became old enough to sneak in to shows at clubs (around '74) the live music scene was unbelievably great. Stayed that way into the 90s, too.

Pheobe Snow grew on me as I aged, mostly as a result of the huge following she had in the jazz scene. I knew several studio musicians, people I learned a great deal about music from, who considered her one of the greatest singers ever. I had loads of vinyl of hers but all of them are gone. All I've got left is "Poetry Man" on itunes, but it's fantastic.

Yes it is! Nobody did it like her. NOBODY!!

I lived in Maine from 1981 to 1994 and I have to say that the radio in New England is the best, and most interesting of anywhere I've been! There are infinitely more options. Like WBCN, the best stations didn't play the top 10's or even very commercial songs, but oh the wonderful things they unleashed on our thirsty ears!! It is one of the many things that make me miss Maine.
