SG Blog Homework: Review the Last Movie You Watched

Okay so this is definitely a blog homework I can get behind, being as my last couple of blogs were movie reviews.

The last movie I watched was a movie that I thought was going to be absolutely terrible. The synopsis makes it sound extremely corny.

"One night, while teenagers Blaire, Mitch, Jess, Adam, Ken, and Val take part in an online group chat session, they are suddenly joined by a user known only as "Billie227." Thinking it's just a technical glitch, the friends carry on their conversation... until Blaire begins receiving messages from someone claiming to be Laura Barns, a classmate who killed herself exactly one year prior. As Blaire tries to expose Billie's identity, her friends are forced to confront their darkest secrets and lies."

So the majority of reviews I've seen of this movie are somewhere in between one and three stars. But here's the thing.

This movie is not going to win any Oscars. This movie was not made with the intention of winning any Oscars. And here is why I actually thoroughly enjoyed it.

I have been waiting a while for some kind of found footage movie to come out based entirely online. A few years back I watched a movie called Smiley, which I hoped would fulfill that criteria. It did not. In fact it was god awful.

The difference with this film was that it left a lot up to my imagination with regards to what the ghost was doing, what it looked like, and it threw just the right amount of suspense in my direction. It was relevant, quick, and a good reflection of how people use technology.

I began by liking most of the characters. They were a typical group of teenage friends (although I do have to notice they were all white... what's that about?) who had their own internal struggles and disputes between them. They had all witnessed something horrible and it had brought them closer together. Okay, cool.

But over the course of the 83 minutes I slowly ended up absolutely hating the characters and completely understanding why the bad guy was out to get them. It was a refreshing change from the mindless attacks that usually happen in horror movies upon innocent people.

Actually seeing people get what they "deserve" (although death is maybe a little far) was vaguely life affirming. It throws a lot at bullying, at backstabbing, at general dishonesty and shallowness. Perhaps it was a lesson for teenagers. Perhaps it was a statement about what we put online.

Either way, it was one of the better horror movies that I've watched for some time.

Here is the trailer.

And just for you, here is a photo from the set I'm currently in the middle of editing by @jupiter it was shot in 2013 and is based on the revamped Tomb Raider. Of which there is another game coming out this year. I'm excited. You should be, too.

And here is a selfie from yesterday, because I'm feeling extra extra generous.

Thanks @rambo and @missy for this awesome blog homework!

drain:
netflix has been full of trash lately. I watched a Nicholas Cage film and then I felt bad about it afterwards and ate my feelings.
