Today I got a letter from Yale University denying me admission for Fall. Oh well. One down, nine schools left to go. My new job selling art supplies at Hobby Lobby is tiresome. Everyone asks if I am from Ireland. I'm not!
I was born in Cincinnati, but grew up in Atlanta, going to speech therapy in both cities (I was a late talker and I have Gene Simmon's tongue). So, I got the worst of both accents, Yankee and Southern. Not at all exotic, and, quite frankly, a little embarrassing.
It is too long a story to run off whenever someone asked me if I am from Ireland, or this or that place, and I have a deep seated hatred of lying, so what am I supposed to do?.
I hate trying to explain myself, but by not doing so I fear people may think it is an affect or an air, which pisses me off. I talk like I do, period, that's it.
I'm 100% American, my family has been here for a while, which means that I'm a mutt, pretty much. Irish, Welsh, a dash of German, and a pinch of Native American (Creek-Cherokee). Just plain typical American melting pot, nothing exotic.

I absolutely know what you mean about the accent thing. People are always shocked when I tell them I'm Australian, always with the "No! You're not!" Yeah, whatever, I'm lying. I'm verybored of that conversation and I have started letting people know I'm not up for it. Shut up, yes I am Australian, yes I know my accent is faint, no I didn't try to lose it, no I'm not American or Canadian, and yes I bloody am sure I'm Australian! First 23 years of my life spent there! Can you hear the exasperation? So, my advice is, next time someone asks if you're Irish, just tear their head off, perhaps it will discourage any others from the same misconception.
Bugger about Yale, but you know that the right school will be the school you end up at. I just hope you find out soon, it sounds like you are more than ready to exit stage left!
