So if I asked you who are the two best artists (music) ever, no doubt you would answer: Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell.

I knew about many coincidences between the two: Both are Canadian, both started around 1966-67 their musical careers, both were introduced as musicians by Judy Collins, both play the guitar, sing and write the best lyrics in folk-pop-rock history,...

I also knew that they had met here and there and had both expressed admiration for each other at some point. But today I came across these pics that I didn't know existed:

And after further investigation I've learned that they actually had a short fling around '67-68. One that left a bittersweet taste to both, but that seems to have inspired at least some songs. At some point, Joni admitted that "A case of you" (one of her best songs) was about L. Cohen, though later she said it was about James Taylor. But James Taylor is not Canadian, and the song seems to suggest this man was Canadian ("on the back of a cartoon coaster, in a blue TV screen light, I drew a map of Canada, oh Canada... with your face sketched on it twice..."). Moreover, Joni has admitted that Cohen was an influence for her, and in the song she says: "I remember that time you told me, you said love is touching souls. Sure you've touched mine, 'cause part of you pours out of me in these lines from time to time...". And maybe more important, when the album Blue (which contains this song) was released, she was actually in a relationship with James Taylor - while the song talks about a past love ("Just before our love got lost you said me...").

So from now on I'd like to believe that "A case of you" was Joni's song to Leonard Cohen smile
