i never know what to say to a friend going through one coz i know how inconsolable people can be when it has just happened.

I think best thing is to simply remind that friend that you are there and easy to find if needed and not to push it. That is also a sound tactic for other tough situations that might have someone in need of help as well as in need of solitude.
