Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home sweet home!
Got back home from the motorcycle road trip yesterday at noon. 4 1/2 days, 1511.8 miles round trip....what a ride! 5 bikes, no mishaps, no close calls or breakdowns. What a great bunch of guys to ride with and spend 4 days with.
We started out on Thursday with warm temps and sunshine in Iowa, but ran into about 20 miles of rain somewhere between Sioux Falls and Mitchell South Dakota. We pulled into Mitchell and stayed the first night there. Friday morning dawned sunny, but windy! All the way to Rapid City we rode in a 35 mph cross wind. It pretty much beat us up and we were pretty worn out by the time we made it to Sturgis in mid afternoon.
The bikes at a fuel stop along I - 90 between Mitchell and Rapid City, patiently waiting for us, as we had a cup of coffee and took a break.
Saturday morning we took a look around the town of Sturgis for about an hour and then headed back to Rapid City. A couple of the guys wanted to stop at the Harley Davidson shop in Rapid City to buy a few things, so after a quick stop there, we headed south toward Mt. Rushmore. What a great ride it was that day. Mt. Rushmore was as spectaular as I remembered it as a kid. They built alot of very nice, new parking and the entrance to see the monument is awesome. It was a great experience to be there again, after so many years. It had clouded up just a little while we were there, so my photo is not as great as I would have liked it to be.
After Mt. Rushmore, we went for lunch. I had BBQ buffalo ribs for dinner....they were great! After lunch we wound our way through Black Hills National Forest, over to where the monument to Crazy Horse is being blasted out of the mountain, much like Mt. Rushmore was. Not much is done there yet, but Crazy Horse's face is done and can be seen quite well.
By then it was getting to be late afternoon and we were 60 miles out of Sturgis and our motel room. We wound our way back through Deadwood and then on in to Sturgis by 6pm.
Sunday morning dawned cold and cloudy....43 degrees. We loaded up our gear, put on our long underwear and all our heavy riding clothes and blasted back east across South Dakota at 80mph with the wind at our backs this time. We made it to Sioux City Iowa, where we stopped for the night, before making the final leg home yesterday morning. What a great trip! The new seat I put on my bike was expensive, but was worth twice what I paid for it. My butt didn't hurt or burn once the whole way, which made for a much more pleasurable ride. I'm ready for another trip soon!
