death isn't always a tragedy, even if it's a great man who dies.
vonnegut was by far my favorite writer and i am eternally grateful for his many works of brilliant insight and imagination. but he was 84, and in his own words, done with writing. no, i'm not saying he was useless or anything like that at all. it's just that he lived a good long while, shared what he had to say with the world, and died at a decent age. i am not sad that he is gone. truthfully, i've been expecting this since seeing an interview with him after the release of "man without a country." not because of his age, but because he said he was done with his life's work. i think kurt was lucky that death held off long enough that he could finish what he had to do. all of us should be that lucky, you know?

i didn't think it was sad, or a tragedy, when kurt cobain died either (because it was his choice). but in that case i can understand the devestation in part. he was young and likely had something important yet to share with us. today i feel nothing but fortunate that vonnegut got to live until he was done sharing.

very unlike me, i actually cried when i found out kurt cobain killed himself! nirvana was my 1st concert ever and that band and their music had a huge impact on my life. and i really think had he not killed himself we would still to this day be getting new music from nirvana. were you a nirvana fan?

I liked Vonnegut very much. My college english professor introduced his work to me, and I still have quite a few to read yet. His perspective on existance is remarkable. Shortly before his death, I saw a article or two by him in the Fifth Estate magazine. He thought he was done writing, but the Bush administrations actions sparked a few more pages out of him.
So it goes. frown
