So, I'm seeing a lot of bitchin' and moanin' about Obama's choice of Rev. Warren for the person who will deliver the invocation (opening prayer) at the inauguration on Jan 20th.
Now, I appreciate that Warren is a jackass with many backwards views, and I personally wouldn't invite the guy over to my place to shovel snow. However, I'm finding the histrionics on Huffpo and the like to be a bit... well, fucking idiotic. Kinda like a two year-old that didn't get the toy they wanted.
First off, here's the deal. The guy's doing the opening prayer. Whoopty shit. Now, had Obama appointed him to a cabinet post, I could certainly understand and would bitching right along with them. However, he didn't. This guy won't be putting so much as a toenail clipping on domestic policy in regards to LGBT rights. He's just going to talk for, what, three minutes? He is like the buzzing of flies to you. To me, this just doesn't seem like a battle worth fighting.
But there's something else here that's making my ass twitch. To those who are screaming their heads off over this, I ask you... Where the fuck were you when Obama was saying "there's no red America, no blue America, there is a United States of America!"? Were you not listening, or just not thinking about what that meant exactly? It meant Obama was going to try to close the rifts that exist in this country. Rifts that have, in many ways, driven our collective spirit into a partisan ditch.
Now, an - admittedly annoying - part of healing rifts and trying to pull the country together is that you're going to have to tolerate people you don't agree with. You're going to have to grit your teeth when morons say moronic things and, yes, you're going to have to offer them a seat at the table. Because one thing Bush and his cronies gleefully disregarded was the inconvenient fact that it was our country, too. So, really, where some people seriously hoping Obama was going to be a left-wing version of Bush? Did they think we democrats were going to start kneecapping Republicans and dixie-chicking conservatives? Obama never promised this. He never advocated it, and was quite clear in his belief that politics was going to be a grown-up affair under his watch. It was one of the things that I loved about him. As I, for one, was sick of that partisan us vs. them bullshit.
I really HOPE the progressive movement as a whole doesn't copy the tactics of the intolerant right-wing. Because, personally, I place a high premium on being the better person... maybe I'm just weird.
I'm not holding my breath, though. With Huffpo bloggers having kittens and Rachel Maddow in such a furious snit that she even revived the Rev. Wright scandal in an attempt to bitchslap Obama on her show on Friday night. Are these people TRYING to fuck up this guy's administration before he even takes office? Really? Yeah, good thinking asshats. The media is already attacking this guy over Blagovich and Warren with a ferocity not directed against a President in... well, whattayaknow, 8 years now... So, by all means "progressives", let's help fracture his base and do Hannity's work for him.
And then, in Dec. of 2012 we'll see what you have to say when President-Elect Palin appoints Rev. Warren to her fucking cabinet. Yeah, gay rights will flourish in the Palin Administration, youbetcha.
