So I was out running yesterday on a road by a small stream out in the boonies and I almost stepped on one of these:

and it scared the shit out of me. I wish I had a video of my reaction because I must have jumped 3 feet in the air. I don't really mind snakes, but he kinda took me by suprise. Afterwards I thought it was cool; I always like it when I see some kind of uncommon wild creature. It makes me feel like Marlin Perkins or something.

I also saw a raccoon on my roof the other night, which was awesome. The weird thing is I live in the middle of a city and I didn't think there were any animals like that around, but I think it's cool that animals can still survive in urban environments like that. Plus raccoons are cute.

wow that would be scary. I used to have a venomous red bellied water snake that I found injured by the road, he didn't live very long though.

I see raccoons almost every day where I live. My dog is constantly chasing them. They're extremely cute little varmints, so I don't get too mad when I hear them digging in the trash at 3 am.

They actually have a 'deer problem' where my dad lives in Suburbia, OH. All the condo developments have displaced the deer, so people are always finding them in their back yards, nibbling at their patio plants. They have authorized 'herd thinning' every year because they get so numerous. I think it would be better to let them be, so they'd come home and find a big buck in front of their TV, crackin' open one of their PBRs. biggrin

I also have a friend near there who has a 'mink problem.' Apparently some well-intention animal rights activists freed these minks from a nearby farm, and they got into the woods and started breeding like rabbits. Now he can look out his back window and see an undulating wave of them crossing the deck, hunting down all the neighborhood chipmunks and bunnies (who knew mink where pack-hunting carnivores?) Stupid activists had no idea what problems they were causing to the local ecosystem. ooo aaa
