It has been two weeks since my last entry.
You think I would have more to report other than "Halo 2 rocks," eh?
Yeah well...I don't. Sorry to disappoint you...so here is a story of idiocy.
There was a junior in highschool and his mother visiting the animation department Thursday. The kid looked like Harry Potter and the mother was an obviosly aging soccer mom. Both of them were fucktards. The kid wanted to know animation...BUT he didn't want to draw....at all....period. I am sorry, but what idiot wants to get into animation and not want to draw. I am not a great illustrator, but I can get at least sketchy ideas when need be. And even if you are computer animation, you have to get model sheets somewhere...and when you do individual projects, you will need to draw them out in concepts and storyboards. Like I said, I never considered myself good, but I seen some pretty shitty artworrk at the place. Makes me feel I am at least average. And if you don't even have the basic idea of drawing...it will sure as hell show up in the modelling.
The mother was even worse. She didn't want to send her son to a "crap school," as she described the Art Institute and Illinois Institute of Art. She went there and oh "there were students sleeping in the lecture halls." No shit...it is a college...they will be sleeping in lecture halls. College students are known to take naps during lectures if they don't get the full nights sleep (myself included). And then she said she didn't want her son to be forced into an art school and teach him too much about art (note: Columbia is more interactive media than art). Third she gave some of the students a hard time. One student "who graduated as a traditional animator, but decided to take one more class at the school to improve his reel) explained his situation and she asked him why he chose somethign that wouldn't get him a job, why he failed (he then explained he was improving his reel) and then why the school failed him. Another student gave an answer that seemed to be apathetic about the department and she already seemed to damn the department from that. She seemed even more disillusioned when one student told her that her parents were getting nothing from the school as she was the one taking the classes. She was viewing our class as we started a group stop motion and about 40 minutes afterwards she asked us why we weren't further along when we said we only have about 3-4 seconds done (note: group of 8 students and a teacher who had to each move individually an puppet in a small table is a slow process). And her saying to the head of the department that "some people have jobs and can't make it Monday or Friday for the tours" showed how much a bitch she was.
Ugh. I hate people seriously. But yeah.
I also picked up Green Day's American Idiot. Great CD. Very great CD. Been listening to it a lot in the past day. That song Boulevard of Broken Dreams gets to me for some reason. I vote the loneliness aspect the song presents...which is how I feel at times.
