wow.
you see, i have vonage for $16 a month (the 500 minute plan) so i have to use my modem through a router so that the phone works. well, i've the 7mbps cable connection offered by my local company.
boy what a difference leaving the router out of the loop makes. i mean, i knew it was ratcheting me down to regular speeds but i've been living with it since i do have 2 or 3 people who actually call me sometimes.
so generally i just connect directly when i'm doing some serious downloading or something. to hell with that. i can check my voicemail online with vonage so i may never get an incoming call again. i've left my phone unhooked and just used my full speed ability the past 2 days and i'm thinking that that's how it's to stay from now on.
if somebody died my getting the phonecall 2 hrs late won't make any difference.
you gotta have priorities
it's kinda sad, though, that i have to have a 7mpbs connection to make SG load in less than 7 seconds. beta, regular or further back into the previous version it's all been the same amount of time to load a page on my regular DSL and cable connections (and those of my friend's/family's that i've accessed it through before). i enjoy the site -and beta looks/works great- but it's the second slowest i ever visit, always has been. much larger and busier pages on other sites load much faster, i've never been able to figure out why SG is so slow. if anyone has the reason, let me know as it's been a stumper for me.
but yeah, that's part of why i'm looking to stay at full speed among the other sites showing even faster than before.
on a different subject, i'm going to be hiking the Appallachian Trail starting in early July. It's too late in season for me to start a north-bound thru-hike and when looking over my south-bound option it doesn't look very doable. Baxter State Park on the other end seems a total bitch to get into and I should've reserved my camping spots months ago. So, I'm just going to go with my original intent of throwing on my backpack and starting on the southern end.... just walking until I feel like coming home. If it's three days, it's three days. If I end up in NY I'll veer west and visit family. I'm just looking to go out and be free for a while.
Rock on everybody. Life is life and all that...
