Well, first you gotta know his wife, nancy spero, doesn't do ANY of her own work and hasn't for years--she doesn't even pick which appropriated images get stuck in her collages--so she's got this ever-shifting squadron of female art atudents who make her art for her and i knew a few of them.
Leon loves that fantasy illustration magazine Heavy Metal--i got one of his copies.
All the drippy backgrounds of his paintings, his assistant does those.
Once i went to a meeting of Artists and Writers in Protest--this was during Gingrich's Contract with America--i gave a little speech about students needing to be active and do stuff and Leon Golub stood up and said to me "YOU! YOU have to be the one to do this! Start it off!"
the documentary--my roomate's got it--it's ok, but there's a lot of footage of Leon sort of narrating himself doing things that are self-evident, like "Now I'm gonna get this nice and green" while mixing green paint. I have a Francis Bacon one that i like much better, because Francis was totally nuts.
