Hurm,

Journal Stuff
I'm going with a slightly more compacted journal format this time. The last several journals were getting cluttered and I have the feeling alot of the stuff I put time into isn't being read anyways. So I'm gonna trim it down a bit and see how this goes. I'm pretty much out of pics to use for my Daily SG pic so that will go into hibernation for now.

Writing Pieces
As many of you know, I love to write. I especially love economics and Chinese history, and a few other ecclectic topics. However the number of pieces I want to do is starting to pile up bigtime. I finally finished my first Econ essay and I already have ideas for #2 and #3 on the way. Plus I have some ideas possibly for publishing. Anyway, I will probably talk about this for the next several journals, so expect to see more on this. Currently I'm working on a photo-comic for Ayres. My work schedule for the next couple of weeks not only will be time-consuming but also draining. This last week has been hard for me to update in everyone's journal. I may have to do another sweep again soon.

For fun, this journal I will explain my name "Rorschach" for those who may be curious.

Origin Of Rorschach
My usage of the handle "Rorschach" actually dates to nearly four years ago. I was starting out in my first online community, Ultima Online, and I had the choice of making my first online identity. The first one I ever made was called "Testor"...'cuz it was a test character (duh). After a while, I saw many people's names and had several observations. I had to make a cool name but one that wasn't being used...but more important I needed a name that meant something special to me. There were too many idiots with "k@wld00d" names, silly names or just plain boring names that took 5 secs to come up with.

I decided to use one of my favorite comic characters from the greatest comic I had read to that date (and I had read ALOT of great books). Obviously that book was Watchmen (by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons)...so all that was next was to choose the right character. I nearly chose "Dr. Manhattan", but the UO system wouldn't accept that name; Manhattan had offensive undertones and I wasn't allowed a space in my name. I also thought about "Ozymandias" but in the end I decided to simply re-read the book for the 50th time and decide at the end of that reading what character best suited ME. That turned out to be Ror...and here's why.

I found it impossible to resist the irony in the dual meaning of this character's name in comparison and contrast with my own personality. The Rorschach character in the book is a vigilante crime fighter and was the most feared scourge of the underworld. But he had no super-powers and he was a tiny, skinny white guy who had been abused as a child. Through several violent incidents he witnesses, he first becomes a fighter for justice and then later he becomes a man obsessed with punishing crime. The meaning of his name is taken from those psychological tests invented by Dr. Rorschach, which are those famous black and white mirrored inkblots. Psychologists ask patients to interpret abstract inkblots to see what's on a patient's mind. However, with Rorschach, the inkblots interpret how he sees the world: in complete black and white, with no gray middle ground.

So I found myself admiring the character in one sense but also I found that my own personality's perspective reflected his polar perspective. In the past I have been a very opinionated person who believed there only one right in every situation, one good in every two-sided argument. On the other hand, I also felt trapped in the environment I had been born into...I often found myself wishing I was other people that I met. The last dozen or so years of my life I have spent changing who I was into who I am now. And the "Rorschach" name eventually took on special meaning for me and I use it in any online or anonymous situation now.

First, the name is a reminder to not see the world in such black and white terms. Good and evil depend only on your perspective. There is no single solution to every problem. Compromise is often the best way to get things done. And sometimes you need to retreat a bit in order to advance even further.

Second, the name is a reminder of how much a person can accomplish in life just by sheer willpower alone. My belief in this idea has freed me from the greatest prisons known to man...for there is no prison greater in life than the ones we make for ourselves. I am the master of my destiny even if I cannot control everything; I have enough control to choose my own path regardless of obstacles real or perceived. And as Robert Frost said, which road you take can make all the difference. smile

Ironically Watchmen is only my second favorite comic of all time. My ALL TIME fave is called Sanctuary.

Not anymore, between last months expenses, trying to eat and put gas in the car this month and buying the car in the first place I'm tapped out. The orig talk was that I would be making 35K annual. I didn't figure that would happen, but I sure didn't expect this.
