Rorschachs Journal 08/03/2010 SDCC 2010 PHAT LOOTZ Edition!

By popular demand (by some insanely hot women here on SG), heres a loot-based journal with pics from the SD trip! Next journal, hopefully coming later this weekend, will have pics from Otakon 2010, yay!

Ok, lets just jump right in:

Intro
I spent a ton of money at SDCC. It will happen when you havent visited in years. More than half was spent (gleefullyyes, I said glee) on presents for my GGS. I was able to find every single indie artist that I was looking for with the exception of Andi Watson, who I didnt think would be there. But there were several pleasant surprises to make up for it. By the way, I think its hot that several of you girls are making friends with each other toojust way cool! Now if yall would just start calling yourself GGS membershehe.

Oh, also if anyone wants more scans/screenshots of any book, let me know.

The hottest book of the con was X-Women by Chris Claremont and insanely good Italian artist Milo Manara. The dealers probably brought like three longboxes of this book to the show and it sold out. This copy I had to swipe from another local dealer after I got back because both my own shops were sold out. Chris mentioned it in a panel that the book existed and after that it was on. I was so happy to see Manara there at the conI got to see him at the Eisner Awards. Ive been a fan of his for decades.

Heavy Metal booth
This wasnt the first or last booth I visited, but I wound up spending the most money there. I got ripped off so I was pissed (all books were marked as half off but the asshole at the register charged me fullI was too tired to notice) but the books I got were nice and I got to meet Lorenzo Sperlonga, whose cover art has been selling HM magazine.

Requiem: This is a series thats currently running off and on in Heavy Metal. I just love its heavily stylized art and subject matter. Dark, goth and sexyvery SG-ish.

Ive been meaning to buy Druuna and other Serpieri art books since the early 90s but I wasnt old enough at the time and then later the books went out of print. This time the HM booth had em all so I just bought them.

Im super-hot for this series right now. Again, its Milo Manara. I cant wait for the final books of the series to come out.

Heres a set of pinup books by Lorenzo Sperlonga. Because I bought all three, he also gave me two posters for free, yay!

Favorite Creator-Owned
With all of these creators, the most important thing I look for is consistency in art. All of these creators have that going with no editors to look over their shoulders.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Usagi Yojimbo! Been reading this since the mid-80syes its been around this long. Its great. I picked up these missing trades and the new trade, #24, while there visiting Stan. He had drawn a quick sketch with auto in every single book he had for sale (and he had them all). I wish I could let all of you gals and guys each visit my home for a week so I could make you read UY.

Rich Kowslowski One of my most favorite books in Western comics is The 3 Geeks, aka Geeksville. Its about three young boys who are hardcore comic book enthusiasts and all the stuff they experience and go through. Its very funny and entertaining. Its basically a bunch of shit that super hero comic book fans (and ONLY those fans) can relate to.

Ive known ET Bryan and his wife for the longest time. They are super-nice people. Their self-published book is called Gremlin Trouble. Its very manga-influenced and several critics have called this book an extremely addictive read. I agree. smile

Never met the guy before but Ive always thought his art was really cool the way that Robert Williams art was neat. He was super-nice and did me up a great autograph too! He does a lot of tattoo art and that little book is full of past tatts hes drawn for people.

Even though the subject matter is very played (zombie, vamps, etc.), I thought this books art was super cute. The interior art is simple but consistent. The story is a bit obvious but Im hooked on the adorable main character. Looking forward to issue 3. smile

I picked up this Dawn 2010 sketchbook from Joe Linsner. It was very nostalgic for me as back in the 90s, I collected his stuff more than any other back in the bad girl era. One day Im going to go back and collect all of those Cry For Dawn books again along with Jim Balents From The Darkness, The Crow, Mark Beachum, Tim Vigils Faust and various other books from that era. I also found two vintage boxes of the trading cards for $25 a box, which is a great deal. There were several of these boxes on the show floor but people wanted $75 or more each. Each box broke in to three sets plus extras of regular cards. If anyone wants a set of cards, holler.

One of my most favorite books is Tales From The Beanworld. This is yet another book like Usagi, 3 Geeks and Gremlin Trouble that I could get the SG readers to read! The bottom three images (to the left) are of Mr. Spook, the hero of Beanworld. The middle image where his body shading is just lines is an original piece. I was thinking of maybe taking one of these three images and turning it in to a tattoo for the back of my neck or right below it so a shirt covers it up.

OMG OMG OMG if I guy could get wet, I did when I got to meet Miss Mizuno, who flew all the way from Japan to be at the show. I guess I could pee my pants but no one wants to see that. tongue

Some various other loose issues I bought from the various booths above. Cool Jim Balent and Holly sketchbook. biggrin

Various Other Books

Some missing manga trades I picked up. Yup, your boy Ror has impeccable taste. Akira by Otomo and Black Jack by Tezuka. Two of the greatest manga of all time by two of the greatest creators in comic history (all of comics, Asian, US and Euro). Now Im only missing one book for Akira and Im totally caught up with Black Jack. BJ is published by Vertical, one of the finest manga publishers out there.

I bought the above comics from Carnal Comics, who published the cheesy porn-star comics of the 90s. He now carries a selection of X-Rated comics from all eras. I picked up a set of the first print, first run The Girl series by Kevin Taylor. Its basically bad girl, super-hardcore porn. (Ill save some for you girls, for your piles. smile) Also in there is a bondage themed book with art Im sure is from one of my most favorite artists, Michael Manning (the pieces are just signed M), a random issue of Faust by Tim Vigil that I dont think I have, an old and rare issue of Peter Hsus Quadrant (in watercolor!) and a missing issue of Silky Whip Extreme manga by Oh Great! who also did the famous Tenjho Tenge series.
The trades, The Girl is basically a collection of that run of comics above, a random Japanese porn manga with really nice art (the name of the artist escapes me), a really cool Will Eisner trade that I got for attending the Eisner Awards and a horror manga that I was missing. Im happy that I could remember that I was missing that last book as I had no notes or anything that I was missing it.

This is a random coffee table book I bought full of artistically manipulated photographs of women by a guy named Jeffrey Scott. Very tastefully doneand something about that coverhot. I wonder if money was no object, how cool would it be to do an SG set like this? I could pull it off (as the producer, not the artist)

Heres a stack of books that I pilfered from my own booth! We were dumping some cool shit for cheap and I just couldnt resist. Ive always wanted something done by Vaughn Bode as I love his style. He drew quality erotic art as an American way back when there werent high standards for drawing women as there are now. Plus I just love the cartoony-ness and the manga-esque way he draws them even though he was doing his thing way before manga was prevalent in the US. And then, a random issue of Aces High, my favorite Silver Age and EC title. It only lasted like five issues and Im slowly collecting each one. One day, when Im way more bored and have more money, Ill go for a set in very high grade. And then a book called Damsels by this extremely talented guy named Mike Thibodeauxhe could have been as big as Dave Stevens (think of Adam Hughesthen think of someone several notches better) but he hurt his hand and couldnt draw any more. Ironically I saw Mike at SDCC and said hi to him and showed him this old bookhis comment Wow, I dont even have that one And finally, an old RPG book from some unknown and obscure comic put out by a small company back in the 80s.

Quick quiz, of the four books on here, which one contains the most significant work??? McFarlanes art, of super heros biggest character Spiderman, which led to Image comics; the first GI Joe trade, the comic that launched the cartoon, the action figure-based toy line and has a J. Scott Campbell cover, or a limited series of Nick Fury, a minor character in the Marvel Universe, by a guy named Jim Steranko who most readers have never heard of
The answer is: Nick Fury by Steranko. Steranko is the most influential comic book artist since Jack Kirby and probably the only one who can be mentioned in the same sentence as a peer of Kirby. Just look at that cover artthis is a book printed the late 60s Take this cover and compare it to any other book from that time. (You can mail your comic school tuition check to Rorschach @ SG 2004, Arcadia, CA 91007).

Various Other Goodies

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

I found this booth that made dice out of semi-precious metals and gemstones. I bought these two sets from them, each set came in its own free leather bag! The back row is a set of solid copper dice with a clear lacquer finish. The other set in the front is a sparkly, sky-blue set made of synthetic opal. Nerdgasm incoming! Both sets are rather heavy. smile The copper set is totally usable but the opal set is just for show as the stone is too hard to cut precisely enough to be fair dice. My shitty camera and poor lighting hardly did any justice to the opal set.

I got to meet my favorite author Richelle Mead. God, was she gorgeous! But I was bummed that I didnt get to take any pictures. frown Im showing the whole run of books I own of hers but she signed the one I have opened. Theres the ticket I got to get in to the signing, the very last one, and a bookmark and trinket she gave me. Ironically of all things she struck up with me a conversation about playing Magic: The Gathering, lol. (I have a thing for redheads.)

These guys had WWII and various other war art-themed shirts for sale. This one was my favorite as I love anything with the Flying Tigers on it, as Im from Taiwan. I later wore that shirt to Otakon, which is very ironic, but since the US public school system is so bad, no one called me on it as its a very anti-Japan thing, haha. Actually instead, another guy had the exact same design on his shirt but he wore the button up version while mine is a Tee. (For fun, I will provide a translation of the Chinese characters on the backThis foreign person has come to China to help in the war effort. Soldiers and civilians, one and all, should rescue and protect him. Reading that always brings a tear to my eye. :*))

My favorite Sanrio character by far is My Melody. But there hasnt been any significant stuff made in over a decadeuntil this year. This year Sanrio has come out with a ton of stuff My Melody items and I picked up this strawberry tear-themed one. Aww, shes sadgiant Chococat will punisherrcomfort you. Im not sure if Ill pursue any other MM stuff as all Sanrio toys seem too nice for a dirt-covered boy like me to touch or hold.

Some various items for giftseach of the first two pics are for two specific peoplehopefully you each know who you are. smile I dont have an address to send the second pics items currently. The first pics have been claimed by the new owner. biggrin The third pic, Im still trying to figure out how to divvy it all up.

Some DVD samplers from various companiesthey usually are free if you attend the show they were given out atI wound up paying $2 bucks a piece, which is really good value. Not only are these DVDs really long usually, but theyre a great way to find out titles and starlets that you might like but didnt know about before.

Dave Stevens book

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

This insane book was only a hundred bucks but was by far my most important purchase of the con. Its a ComicCon exclusive and is a hardcover larger than the size of actual comic art pages. My cousin and his friend spent a ton of time tracking down pieces in private collections of Dave Stevens and also collating and scanning in hundreds of pieces from the Stevens family archives at their estate. There had been other books put out recently of DS art but this one contains just about every single possible piece available and its all 100% life-size. Just 100 copies were made and it won the Eisner award this year for best Comic book compilation. biggrin

All in all, I hurt myself pretty good with the carrying of all this loot and this is only half of it as much of it has already been given away or divvyed up into my various GGS piles. One of the best things about having a booth at a con is that you can use it as a home base to drop off all your goodies.

.><.

PS - You can see all of the images full size here. I'm still trying to figure out how people can put in full size images that show up with the magnifying glass thingie.
