LAWL!

On a more serious note (although still tech related) I found an application for my Linux Ubuntu system a few weeks ago that has single-handedly (I hate that term, but I can't find another suitable one right now) revolutionised my interaction with, and thoughts about, my humble laptop.

That program is called 'Gnome-Do' and it's a quick-launch application that connects you to any file, folder, program or task in your system with only a few keystrokes (very similar to Mac's 'Quicksilver', for any of you who are familiar with that OS).

I LOVE Gnome-Do. Really. I can't imagine using my system now without it and I intend to make it a staple in any system I use in my computing future.

Recently I saw in my RSS feeds a post from the main developer of Gnome-Do. I read it because I love his program and am always hungry for new info about it. In his post he tells the Ubuntu community at large, and Gnome-Do users in particular, that the computer he's been using for most of his development work has crashed irrecoverably. It is also his personal computer. He's asking the community for donations to buy a new machine so he can continue working on 'Do.

I'm torn. I really love the program and I fervently hope for development to continue on it. It's an amazing application already and it's only at version 0.6.

But on the other hand, I don't see why I, as a user of free, open-source software, should be chipping in to buy a developer (even of an app that I adore) a new computer.

What are your thoughts on the matter, people whom I respect?
lexiphanic:
It's a donation. He's not insisting. He's not saying development will stop forever unless you do donate. He's just saying, y'know, if you like the product and want to show your support, one of the ways to do that is by donating my some money so that I can buy a new computer and keep developing said product. If you're not happy with that, what with it being free and open source, well, since it is open-source, you DO, instead, have the option of taking the code and continuing development yourself.
Y'know, if you know how. tongue
