Why do some people talk so loudly in coffe shops? I dropped in at my local Costa this afternoon for an Americano decafe and the hope of a quiet few minutes to think about some possible Chrsimas gifts I'd seen for my girlfriend. No chance. Within minutes I was surrounded by quadrophonic conversation of considerable decibells. Now I don't know about you, but I hate people listening in to my conversations , and normally I try hard not to listen into others. But the content of the rowdy chorus in Costas this afternoon was unavoidable. Due south were a couple of teenage girls using language befitting rough-neck
labourers to colour up their accounts of the previous night's debauchery at some disco dance. We even had a detailed description of some poor lad's undersized penis. They may, of course, have been just exagerating for the Costa audience, but
we, who had to listen, were given the impression they had both been laid about three times after the dance. Then to the north there was a trio of single-parent mums moaning about the inadequacy of their social security payments. They were, of course, all downing large capachinos at 2.75 ( about $4) a shot and chain smoking. And as luck would have it, west of me were a couple of old dears drinking tea, one of whom was clearly almost deaf. Not to be outdone by the teenagers and mums, the hearing old dear was shouting at the top of her voice. Despite the volume I couldn't make much sense of what she was saying, but I think it had something to do the time their bus would be leaving. Finally to my east was a party of foreign students, Korean I think, seemingly telling each other jokes, Or they may just have been mocking the silent sad man leaning over his Americano. Do you know I honestly had the urge to bellow out "SHUT UP!"...but then they were paying customers too. Anyway I still don't know what to buy my girlfriend for Christmas. Ear muffs maybe?
