I feel that here in the U.S., a society has been created that is probably the best that is humanly possible. But I fear that, that society will be destroyed by those who would choose security over freedom. People should have the right to do what they choose as long as it hurts no one else. I saw Ann Coulters book Godless on the shelf at the bookstore in the mall. It disgust me, but I know, to take the book off the shelf because of her views would be a worse crime. The paradox with liberal democracy is that the freedom it grants can be used to destroy it. That's what happened in the Weimar Republic, and it can happen here in the States. I can only hope that people will have the good sense not to be blinded by fear and propaganda, but the realist in me tells me otherwise.
