Ah this corporate music argument keeps going. I am a corporate whore. Here's the question:

If you were a musician (as I am) would you sell your soul and sign to a major label knowing that you'll share the roster with Britney Spears and Limp Dick Bizkit, but also knowing that you'll be able to afford to make the music you want and be sure that millions of people will have heard of you?

- or -

Do you choose to stick to your guns and deny the machine, knowing that you'll probably have to work a second job to feed yourself and having little to no exposure for your music?

My answer: I'd sell my soul, cause I want a job that I love and I want people to hear what I create musically. I write music for people to listen to, the more the merrier. Imagine if Miles Davis never sold his soul. I pick and choose my likes and dislikes in the corporate world...I HATE Limp Bizkit, but I like the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I HATE bubble gum pop, but I like Pink Floyd. I HATE "The" bands, but I like Tool. I HATE bling bling rap, but I love me some Beatles.
mess:
hey, i worked at KNWD in Natchitoches. it's about 3 hours north, but i was in Nawlins at least twice a month for concerts or to see friends.

it's unfortunate that most people don't even get the choice to sell-out or not. my roommate was the drummer in Good Riddance for several years, has played in some great bands like Downset, Downcast, Dr. Know, Crack!, and has been in Kidney Theives now for close to a year and a half. If that's not a dramatic change i don't know what is... anyway, despite some moderate cashing in, he hasn't profitted at all and is looking to find another punk rock outfit to play with. mainly b/c they know how to manage themselves for the most part...i don't know what i'd do. i may be faced w/ the question sooner than later though.

did miles sell-out? i always thought he just went crazy...the whole Mr. Cool phase.

mess:
ya, i'm a record promoter at the moment. i've been trying desperately for the last couple years to do something else, but it's slim pickins as far as decent jobs go. i work w/ college radio, but all of my records suck at this company.

kidney theives. ya, same band. free dominguez is the singer in the bath. she's a handful...i think she may have broken up the band essentially too.

when miles started doing the heavy fusion he created an alter-ego so he could get away w/ anything he wanted. he called himself Mr. Cool. he totally went off the deep end.
